1 Kings 2:1-3 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
\n2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, show yourself a man,
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and observe what the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go,<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses\u00a01-3:\u00a0 Here David is on his deathbed.\u00a0 David’s last words to King Solomon his son are “be courageous, be a man, and obey God’s commands.” (v2-3)\u00a0 After all the experiences David had accumulated over his lifetime — his unprecedented victories, his heartbreaking losses, and all the lessons he learned from both his successes and his mistakes — the most important lesson David could tell Solomon is: trust and obey God.\u00a0 “Do this,” David says, “so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go” (v3).<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0The key to a successful and prosperous life is trusting and obeying God.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0God gives us His commands not to limit our freedom or to hamper our happiness.\u00a0 Rather He gives us His commands so that by following them maximum blessing can pour in and through our lives.\u00a0 God’s commands are for your success.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0The most important lesson we can teach the next generation is how to trust and obey God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Parents, we can spend so much time and money sending our kids to all kinds of extracurricular activities \u2013 sports, music, art, robotics, dance, drama, the list is endless.\u00a0 Yet how much time and money do we spend investing in the most important areas of their lives, namely, their relationship with God and their character as people?<\/p>\n

1<\/strong>\u00a0Kings\u00a02:4 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n4\u00a0<\/sup>and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse 4: There is another reason why David urges Solomon to live a life of obedience to God.\u00a0 It’s so that God will fulfill His promise to always maintain a son of David on the throne.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0 When it comes to the promises that God speaks to us for our benefit, we have a part to play in seeing those promises fully realized.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 Even if we are faithless, God will still be faithful to His promises.\u00a0 Still, if we don\u2019t combine our hearing of God\u2019s promises with faith and wisdom, we will not see God\u2019s promises and plans fulfilled in all the ways God intended.\u00a0 God allows us to play an important part in seeing God\u2019s plans for you come true in their fullness.<\/p>\n

1 Kings 2:5-9 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me–what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet.
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Deal with him according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai of Gilead and let them be among those who eat at your table. They stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.
\n8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“And remember, you have with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the\u00a0LORD: ‘I will not put you to death by the sword.’
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom; you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.”
\n<\/em>
\nOn verses 5-9:\u00a0 Here David tells Solomon how to deal with certain individuals who had a significant impact on David’s life.\u00a0 About the sons of Barzillai, David tells Solomon to treat them with great honour for they stood by David during the toughest season of his life (v7).\u00a0 However, about Joab, David says, “do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace” (v6). About Shimei, David says, “bring his gray head down to the grave in blood” (v9).<\/p>\n

How could David a man of God command such things against Joab and Shimei?\u00a0 It’s because Joab and Shimei had caused David great trouble while David was king.\u00a0 More than wanting to exact revenge, David wanted to protect Solomon from experiencing the same trouble from these characters.\u00a0 David wanted his son Solomon to have a peaceful reign.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n

First, when David says that Joab\u2019s evil deeds have stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet (v5), I can\u2019t help but think of how in Paul\u2019s letter to the Ephesians he describes truth as the belt around our waist and our readiness to represent Jesus as the shoes that we wear.\u00a0 So one lesson I learn here is that\u00a0when we act in evil ways, we compromise the truth that holds our lives together and we become much less prepared to represent Jesus as we should<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Second, here we see King David delaying his wrath against those who sinned against him.\u00a0 In so doing, he showed kindness to the likes of Joab and Shimei by letting them live longer, but also recommended that they eventually be extinguished before they could commit the same sins against his son Solomon.\u00a0 Similarly,\u00a0in His kindness God sometimes delays His wrath against evildoers, but in His love God will also make sure that those evildoers are extinguished before they can harm His children with finality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Third, just as David said these words to Solomon to protect him from harm,\u00a0if you want to ensure peace for the next generation, you need to warn the next generation about the problems that disturbed your generation so that the next generation can properly protect themselves against similar problems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>
\n
\n1<\/strong>\u00a0Kings\u00a02:10-12 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n10\u00a0<\/sup>Then David rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David.
\n11\u00a0<\/sup>He had reigned forty years over Israel–seven years in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem.
\n12\u00a0<\/sup>So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his rule was firmly established.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 10-12:\u00a0 Why was Solomon able to begin his reign as king with his rule “firmly established” (v12)?\u00a0 It’s because his father David did what he could to set Solomon up for success.\u00a0 David took intentional, thoughtful and necessary steps to make sure that the proper infrastructure and support systems were in place so that his successor Solomon could begin his reign peacefully and powerfully.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0 You are never too young or too old to invest in the next generation.\u00a0 No matter who we are, there is always a next generation coming after us — it could be your own kids, people in your church who are younger than you, people you are leading, coaching or supervising, co-workers or schoolmates who are younger than you. What are you doing to set them up for success?<\/p>\n

Just as God has a heart for the next generation, and just as David set up Solomon for success, may you have a heart for the next generation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>May you use what God has given you to help those coming after you to succeed.\u00a0 It’s one of the most important ways you can make use of the life God has given you.<\/p>\n

Father, I would not be here today had it not been for people older than me who took the time and made the effort to invest in me.\u00a0 May I too have a heart for the next generation.\u00a0 Like David, thank You that You placed me on this earth to help those coming after me.\u00a0 Use me to set the next generation up for great success.\u00a0 In Jesus’ name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n
