1 Kings 5:1-5 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong>
\n1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king to succeed his father David, he sent his envoys to Solomon, because he had always been on friendly terms with David.
\n2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Solomon sent back this message to Hiram:
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“You know that because of the wars waged against my father David from all sides, he could not build a temple for the Name of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0his God until the\u00a0LORD\u00a0put his enemies under his feet.
\n4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But now the\u00a0LORD\u00a0my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster.
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0my God, as the\u00a0LORD\u00a0told my father David, when he said, ‘Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.’
\n<\/em>
\nOn verses\u00a01-5:\u00a0 In these verses King Solomon communicates with King Hiram of Tyre, a long time ally of his father David.\u00a0 King Solomon discloses to King Hiram his ambition to build a temple where people can worship the Lord.\u00a0 Solomon notes that this was also his father David’s desire, but David was not able to build the temple because he was always fighting the enemies surrounding him.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0 Here are two lessons I learned:<\/p>\n

1. Solomon had a glorious ambition in his heart to build God’s temple, and God used him greatly.\u00a0 Similarly, God wants to use you to build His church.\u00a0\u00a0May God place a glorious ambition in your heart to use what He has given you to build His church.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0May He expand His kingdom through your life so that generations will be blessed.<\/p>\n

2. It’s hard for God’s temple to be built in your lifetime when you’re still battling enemies around you.\u00a0 But praise God that through Jesus Christ we have victory over our enemy, Satan, and a peace that surpasses our problems.\u00a0\u00a0With Christ’s victory and peace in our lives, we can now work with God on building His temple (His church) in our lives.<\/strong>\u00a0 And since the enemy will still want to rebel and attack (though in a losing cause), we must always be on guard as we build, just like Nehemiah and his teammates rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem while standing guard against their enemies (see Nehemiah 4:16-17).<\/p>\n

1 Kings 5:6-12 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“So give orders that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me. My men will work with yours, and I will pay you for your men whatever wages you set. You know that we have no one so skilled in felling timber as the Sidonians.”
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When Hiram heard Solomon’s message, he was greatly pleased and said, “Praise be to the\u00a0LORD\u00a0today, for he has given David a wise son to rule over this great nation.”
\n8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So Hiram sent word to Solomon: “I have received the message you sent me and will do all you want in providing the cedar and pine logs.
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0My men will haul them down from Lebanon to the sea, and I will float them in rafts by sea to the place you specify. There I will separate them and you can take them away. And you are to grant my wish by providing food for my royal household.”
\n10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0In this way Hiram kept Solomon supplied with all the cedar and pine logs he wanted,
\n11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand cors of wheat as food for his household, in addition to twenty thousand baths this for Hiram year after year.
\n12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0LORD\u00a0gave Solomon wisdom, just as he had promised him. There were peaceful relations between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 6-12:\u00a0 Here in these verses King Solomon enters into a peaceful, working relationship with Hiram King of Tyre.\u00a0 In exchange for receiving natural resources (timber) and superior skilled workers from Hiram King of Tyre, King Solomon provides food (in particular, wheat and pressed olive oil) for Hiram’s royal household.\u00a0 Verse 12b suggests that this arrangement was wise and pleasing in God’s eyes.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0 Do not wrongly assume that to be set apart for God means that you must have no interaction at all with people who worship and believe something other than the Lord.\u00a0 Rather,\u00a0we are to have wise and strategic dealings with non-believers, capitalizing on their resources and skills, and also making the most of opportunities to share our most precious food — Jesus Christ (our bread of life) and the Holy Spirit (our most precious oil) with them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 Kings 5:13-16 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0King Solomon conscripted laborers from all Israel–thirty thousand men.
\n14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He sent them off to Lebanon in shifts of ten thousand a month, so that they spent one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor.
\n15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Solomon had seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand stonecutters in the hills,
\n16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0as well as thirty-three hundred foremen who supervised the project and directed the workmen.
\n<\/em>
\nOn verses 13-16:\u00a0 Solomon organized his workers in such a way that they would not burn out easily.\u00a0 He allowed his conscripted laborers to spend one month in Lebanon to work and two months at home (v14).\u00a0 What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0Be wise in the way you use and manage the resources, especially the people, God has entrusted to you.\u00a0 Pace yourself so that your people and resources are not spread too thin or exhausted too quickly.\u00a0 Have the long-term good in mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 Kings 5:17-18 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0At the king’s command they removed from the quarry large blocks of quality stone to provide a foundation of dressed stone for the temple.
\n18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The craftsmen of Solomon and Hiram and the men of Gebal cut and prepared the timber and stone for the building of the temple.
\n<\/em>
\nOn verses 17-18:\u00a0 King Solomon used the highest quality stone to make the foundation for the temple.\u00a0 Similarly,\u00a0what material did God use to make the foundation for His church?\u00a0 He chose the most precious, high quality stone there is — Jesus Christ, “a chosen and precious cornerstone” (<\/strong>1<\/strong>\u00a0Peter 2:6)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Just as the stone Solomon used was taken out of a quarry (or a deep pit), Jesus Christ was buried in a quarry like tomb, but he was taken from there, raised back to life, and become the foundation for His church (1\u00a0Corinthians\u00a03:11).<\/p>\n

Father, may I be a wise steward of all the resources You have entrusted to me, especially the relationships You allow me to have.\u00a0 Just as You built Your church on Your most precious Son Jesus, use me to build Your church too, so that my generation and generations after me will be blessed.\u00a0 In Jesus’ name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n
