I am the\u00a0LORD.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Say to them: &#8216;For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the\u00a0LORD, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the\u00a0LORD.<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;If a descendant of Aaron has an infectious skin disease or a bodily discharge, he may not eat the sacred offerings until he is cleansed. He will also be unclean if he touches something defiled by a corpse or by anyone who has an emission of semen,<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0or if he touches any crawling thing that makes him unclean, or any person who makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The one who touches any such thing will be unclean till evening. He must not eat any of the sacred offerings unless he has bathed himself with water.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the sun goes down, he will be clean, and after that he may eat the sacred offerings, for they are his food.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He must not eat anything found dead or torn by wild animals, and so become unclean through it. I am the\u00a0LORD.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-8:\u00a0\u00a0In ancient Jewish culture,\u00a0the Israelites considered each new day to begin in the evening when the sun set, not in the morning when the sun rose.\u00a0 In current Western culture, when we see the sun rise, we think, \u201cA new day is just about to start\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In contrast, the Israelites saw evening when the sun set as the mark of a new day.\u00a0\u00a0That&#8217;s why in Genesis\u00a01\u00a0it says, &#8220;And there was evening, and there was morning \u2013 the first day&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So in\u00a0Leviticus\u00a022:6, when it says a descendant of Aaron the high priest will be unclean &#8220;<em>till evening<\/em>&#8220;, it means that no matter how unclean the priest was, God&#8217;s mercy makes that priest new when a new day begins.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Aren&#8217;t you glad that God&#8217;s mercies are new every day?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0It reminds me of Lamentations 3:22-23 which says, \u201cThe steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;\u00a0<strong>his mercies\u00a0<\/strong>never come to an end;\u00a0<strong>they are new every morning<\/strong>; great is your faithfulness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every day, whether intentionally or unintentionally, I am sinning against God in some way.\u00a0 But praise God!\u00a0 No matter how unclean with sin I become, God\u2019s mercies are new with each new day.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Leviticus 22:9-16 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;The priests are to keep my requirements so that they do not become guilty and die for treating them with contempt. I am the\u00a0LORD, who makes them holy.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;No one outside a priest&#8217;s family may eat the sacred offering, nor may the guest of a priest or his hired worker eat it.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But if a priest buys a slave with money, or if a slave is born in his household, that slave may eat his food.<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If a priest&#8217;s daughter marries anyone other than a priest, she may not eat any of the sacred contributions.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But if a priest&#8217;s daughter becomes a widow or is divorced, yet has no children, and she returns to live in her father&#8217;s house as in her youth, she may eat of her father&#8217;s food. No unauthorized person, however, may eat any of it.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;If anyone eats a sacred offering by mistake, he must make restitution to the priest for the offering and add a fifth of the value to it.<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The priests must not desecrate the sacred offerings the Israelites present to the\u00a0LORD<br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0by allowing them to eat the sacred offerings and so bring upon them guilt requiring payment. I am the\u00a0LORD, who makes them holy.'&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 9-16:\u00a0\u00a0Verses 9 through 16 begin and end with this phrase, \u201cI am the Lord, who makes them holy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0For the Israelites back then, and for us today, it is a reminder that\u00a0<strong>it is not our effort to obey God\u2019s commands that makes us holy.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not our performance or our resume that makes us holy.\u00a0\u00a0It is the Lord who makes us holy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On our own we have no hope of being holy.\u00a0 \u201cFor everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God\u2019s glorious standard.\u201d\u00a0(Romans 3:23) \u00a0But because God did not want to live apart from us, because He loves us,\u00a0<strong>the whole story of the Bible is about a God who makes us holy.\u00a0\u00a0How?\u00a0\u00a0By sacrificing Himself and giving us His holiness in exchange for our sin.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0To this day, by His Holy Spirit living in us, He empowers us to live holy lives that we could not live by our own strength.\u00a0\u00a0I could never make myself holy, but praise God.\u00a0\u00a0He is the One who makes us holy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Thank You, Lord, for Your mercies, which are new every morning!\u00a0 And thank You that it is You who makes me holy.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
