Mark 6:7\u00a0(NIV)<\/strong>
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse 7:\u00a0 Jesus was not just about serving crowds.\u00a0 Even more, Jesus was about making disciples and sending them into the world to do what he did.\u00a0 And this is what he does here.\u00a0 He\u2019s calling the Twelve to Himself and then sending them out with authority.<\/p>\n

Mark 6:8-9 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff–no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Wear sandals but not an extra tunic.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 8-9:\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t just send his disciples out with authority.\u00a0 He sent them out with instructions.\u00a0 That\u2019s smart leadership: giving authority\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0accountability.\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 first instruction here is about two things: live simply and stay hungry.\u00a0 Jesus wanted his disciples to live in a way where their hope and dependency were in God, not in food (\u201cno bread\u201d), material possessions (\u201cno bag\u201d) or money.\u00a0 They would simply be depending on God to provide for their basic needs as they served Him.<\/p>\n

Mark 6:10 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse 10:\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 next instruction is about being stable and consistent.\u00a0 He tells his disciples not to keep moving from place to place, house to house.\u00a0 For each time you needlessly uproot yourself from one place and park yourself in another place (church hoppers take heed) you\u2019re needing to re-orient yourself again, all the while wasting your and other people\u2019s time, resources and energy. When you\u2019re so focused on moving from house to house, if you\u2019re not careful, you could start acting more like a spiritual shopper than a disciple sent on a mission.\u00a0 Instead,\u00a0stay in one house, be stable, consistent, and build a reputation for being trustworthy and content<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 God blesses that kind of disciple.<\/p>\n

Mark 6:11 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse 11:\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 final instruction to his disciples before sending them out: shake off the dust.\u00a0 In other words,\u00a0when you\u2019re on God\u2019s mission, you will face rejection, setbacks and disappointments.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let them get you down.\u00a0 Shake off the dust and move on.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0There are so many other people you can reach, so don\u2019t be caught up in the rejection of a few.<\/p>\n

Mark 6:12-13 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They went out and preached that people should repent.
\n13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 12-13:\u00a0 The authority Jesus gives is real and so is the power that comes with that authority.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t that the disciples were powerful in and of themselves, but it was the authority that Jesus gave them that was powerful.\u00a0 Similarly,\u00a0as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you have been given authority to represent Him in this world, to advance the kingdom of God against the kingdom of darkness.\u00a0 Believe you have that authority when you serve Him, and great things will happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus, I pray that I would live simply, stay hungry, and shake off the dust.\u00a0 For Your glory, may I live in and live out the authority You have given to me as Your child.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n
