There he was transfigured before them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-2:\u00a0 It\u2019s not too much of a stretch to say that when Jesus lived on earth, His glory was under cover, veiled by human flesh.\u00a0 For while Jesus came to the world revealing God\u2019s glory, in some ways by being limited to a human form Jesus was also concealing God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 For if Jesus came to us in all the glory that He had in heaven, we would not be able to take it.\u00a0 Like Moses who came down from Mount Sinai with a radiant face and at the people\u2019s bidding had to cover himself with a veil, so Jesus\u2019 heavenly glory would be too much for us to take on earth.\u00a0 That is why this scene that Mark 9 describes \u2013 the transfiguration of Jesus \u2013 is so precious.\u00a0 To transfigure means to change in appearance.\u00a0 Here, for a moment, God takes the cover off of Jesus\u2019 glory and gives Peter, James and John a glimpse at the kind of glory Jesus had in heaven. \u00a0\u00a0John would see a vision of Jesus\u2019 glory again later in life, which prompted him to write the book of Revelation.<\/p>\n<p>Now notice this: Jesus didn\u2019t reveal Himself this way to everybody.\u00a0 He revealed Himself this way only to His closest disciples when He was alone with them.\u00a0 What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t just chase crowds.\u00a0 Some of the most precious, most important experiences God wants to give you will only come when you get alone with Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mark 9:3-4 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 3-4:\u00a0 It is significant that Moses and Elijah specifically are the ones talking with Jesus.\u00a0 Moses, the greatest leader of the Old Testament, represented God\u2019s law.\u00a0 Elijah the greatest prophet of the Old Testament, represented God\u2019s prophets.\u00a0 Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets.\u00a0 As Jesus would say in Matthew 5:17:\u00a0\u00a0<em>&#8220;Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let me put it another way so that the significance is not lost on you.\u00a0 The ultimate message of the law (represented by Moses ) is: \u201cYou\u2019re a sinner who needs a Saviour.\u201d\u00a0 The ultimate message of the prophets (represented by Elijah) is: \u201cGod is sending a Saviour (Messiah) to you\u201d.\u00a0 The ultimate message that Jesus embodied and preached is: \u201cThat Saviour has come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mark 9:5-8 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Peter said to Jesus, &#8220;Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters&#8211;one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: &#8220;This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 5-8: \u00a0What mistake did Peter make?<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Instead of being quiet and listening to Jesus, Peter was a busybody and couldn\u2019t sit still.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 By offering to build three shelters, one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah, Peter was potentially diverting the attention away from Jesus and onto himself.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 By offering to build three shelters, one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah, Peter was potentially putting Moses and Elijah on the same level as Jesus, when in fact as great Moses and Elijah are, Jesus is far, far greater.<\/p>\n<p>How should we live based on this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t be so into your own plans and agenda that you miss what God is saying to you.\u00a0 Take time to be still and listen to Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;\u00a0 Don\u2019t get in the way of God\u2019s glory by taking attention away from Jesus and putting it on yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;\u00a0 Don\u2019t put other people or things on the same level as Jesus.\u00a0 Let Jesus be by far your number one love, the one you live for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mark 9:9-13 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what &#8220;rising from the dead&#8221; meant.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And they asked him, &#8220;Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus replied, &#8220;To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 9-13:\u00a0 Many people thought that the prophet Elijah would somehow come back before God\u2019s judgment day and before God sent His Messiah.\u00a0 This was based on the last words of the Old Testament, which go like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Malachi 4:5-6 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0comes.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here Jesus affirms that Elijah does come first and suggests that this prophecy was fulfilled when John the Baptist came and ministered (see Matthew 17:13).<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus, You are greater than anything or anyone.\u00a0 No one can compare to You.\u00a0 I pray that I would not get in the way of Your glory.\u00a0 I pray that I wouldn\u2019t be so into myself and my plans that I miss what You\u2019re saying.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<p>copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
