Mark 10:32\u00a0(NIV)<\/strong>
\n32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid.\u00a0 Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse 32:\u00a0 Why were the disciples astonished and those who followed afraid? It\u2019s probably because of what Jesus was telling them on their way to Jerusalem, which Mark describes in verses 33-34.<\/p>\n

Mark 10:33-34 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n33\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,
\n34\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 33-34:\u00a0 Don\u2019t take for granted the courage that Jesus demonstrated with every step he took toward Jerusalem, knowing what kind of fate awaited him there.\u00a0 Jesus was not led by fear, but by God\u2019s purpose, and thus he could lead others with great effectiveness (v32).\u00a0\u00a0Great leaders are not driven by fear but by purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mark 10:35-45 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n35\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”
\n36\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
\n37\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
\n38\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”
\n39\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,
\n40\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”<\/em>
\n41\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.
\n42\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
\n43\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
\n44\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
\n45\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 35-45:\u00a0 Even as they were following Jesus, James and John were focused on their own glory.\u00a0 The other disciples were indignant (v41) when they heard this, probably in part because they had similar thoughts themselves.\u00a0 And so Jesus gives them a crucial lesson in what greatness truly looks like:\u00a0greatness is about servanthood, about living your life for a purpose greater than yourself and to benefit others more than yourself<\/strong>.\u00a0 That\u2019s what Jesus came to do, not to be served, but to serve.<\/p>\n

Jesus, I am amazed at Your courage, Your humility, and Your selflessness.\u00a0 You are the greatest leader who ever lived.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n
