{"id":37319,"date":"2025-09-11T22:00:28","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T05:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/?p=37319"},"modified":"2025-09-02T21:14:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T04:14:19","slug":"mark_12_35-44","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/mark_12_35-44\/","title":{"rendered":"Worthy of All the Honour"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Mark\u00a0 12:35-44 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%2012%3A35-44&amp;version=NIV\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37321 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/250912_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/250912_1.png 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/250912_1-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Mark 12:35-44.\u00a0 With an open mind and a humble heart, read this passage and see what sticks out to you in this passage.\u00a0 Is there a verse, a phrase, or a lesson you think the Holy Spirit may be highlighting for you in this passage?\u00a0 After you\u2019ve thought about the passage yourself a bit, read the GAME sharing below.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mark 12:35-37 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, &#8220;How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David?<br \/>\n<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: &#8220;&#8216;The Lord said to my Lord: &#8220;Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.&#8221;&#8216;<br \/>\n<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0David himself calls him &#8216;Lord.&#8217; How then can he be his son?&#8221; The large crowd listened to him with delight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 35-37:\u00a0 The Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees and the teachers of the law all had their turns asking Jesus tough questions.\u00a0 Jesus answered every one of their questions with amazing wisdom and poise.\u00a0 Now it was Jesus\u2019 turn to ask a question.\u00a0 Unlike his critics whose questions were traps to make Jesus look bad, Jesus asks his question to reveal a powerful truth about Himself.\u00a0 Jesus takes a familiar teaching that his listeners took for granted \u2013 the idea that the Christ (Messiah) is the \u201cson of David\u201d, i.e. a descendant of David.\u00a0 Jesus questions how the Messiah can be the son of David when David himself in Psalm 110 describes this Messiah as \u201cmy Lord\u201d (v36).\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t \u201cmy Lord\u201d suggest someone much more senior and more powerful than David?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is this: David himself recognized that the Messiah would not only succeed him but precede him.\u00a0 That is, the Holy Spirit had revealed to David that the Messiah who would come from his ancestral line would be both human and divine.\u00a0 In this way, the Messiah would be both David\u2019s son\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>David\u2019s Lord, both David\u2019s king and David\u2019s heir.\u00a0 And that is what Jesus is.\u00a0 Humanly speaking Jesus is the legal descendant of King David, but as the eternal Son of God, Jesus is also David\u2019s lord who existed long before David was born.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The Old Testament anticipated a Messiah who is both human and divine, both the Son of David and the Son of God.<\/strong>\u00a0 Jesus is that Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>If you want to get the most out of Scripture, like Jesus, ask questions about what you\u2019re reading and hearing.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t take anything for granted.<\/strong>\u00a0 This kind of attitude can lead you to a deeper understanding of Scripture and who God is.\u00a0 The enemy of faith is not questions.\u00a0 The enemy of faith is laziness and unbelief.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mark 12:38-40 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As he taught, Jesus said, &#8220;Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces,<br \/>\n<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.<br \/>\n<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They devour widows&#8217; houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 38-40:\u00a0 Jesus warned his disciples about becoming like the teachers of the law who were obsessed with their own fame, honour, glory and power, even while claiming to worship and serve God.\u00a0 What does Jesus mean in verse 40 by \u201cdevour widows\u2019 houses\u201d?\u00a0 Probably that these teachers of the law would take advantage of the most vulnerable in society such as widows.\u00a0 Jesus warns that God will hold such people accountable.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>It\u2019s not about our fame, our honour or our name.\u00a0 It\u2019s about Jesus\u2019 fame, honour and name.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mark 12:41-44 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.<br \/>\n<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.<br \/>\n<sup>43\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, &#8220;I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.<br \/>\n<sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything&#8211;all she had to live on.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 41-44:\u00a0 If your heart is for God, it will be reflected in your giving because, as Jesus says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Remember that to God, what matters is not so much the amount you give, but the proportion.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>How much of your heart does God have?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can give millions of dollars, but if those millions represent only a tiny percentage of what you have, in God&#8217;s eyes that\u2019s less than the person who gives much less in amount but much more in proportion.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Since God wants your whole heart, like the widow that Jesus pointed to, let\u2019s surrender our whole selves to Him, everything we are and everything we have.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Father, I surrender everything I am and have to You.\u00a0 I am Yours.\u00a0 Do with me as You wish.\u00a0 My trust is in You.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"m_-6043851659084498110:3dv\" role=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-label=\"Hide expanded content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
