After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, &#8220;Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>71\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know this man you&#8217;re talking about.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>72\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: &#8220;Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.&#8221; And he broke down and wept.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 66-72: Earlier that day, Peter said to Jesus in front of the other disciples, \u201cEven if all fall away, I will not\u2026Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.\u201d (Mark 14:29, 31)\u00a0 Yet hours later, that very night, Peter finds himself disowning Jesus three times.<\/p>\n<p>Notice this: that night Peter was afraid and reluctant to identify with Jesus the Son of God at the same time that Jesus was going to the cross to identify with sinners like Peter and the rest of us.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>How many times have I, like Peter, refused to identify with Jesus, and yet at the cross Jesus courageously identified with a sinner like me.\u00a0 God in His humility was willing to associate with sinners, while we in our pride were unwilling to associate with Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peter was so shattered, embarrassed, and heartbroken over his failure that he considered going back to his old profession of fishing (John 21:3).\u00a0 But thankfully that was not the end of Peter\u2019s story.\u00a0 Jesus would end up restoring his relationship with Peter, and Peter would go on to become the rock on which Jesus would build His church.<\/p>\n<p>Peter\u2019s story shows us that what\u2019s most important is not whether or not you have experienced failure in life, but how you respond to failure.\u00a0 Because we\u2019re all human, we will all deal with failure at some point.\u00a0 The question is not whether or not we will fail, but rather how we respond to it when we do.<\/p>\n<p>There are unhealthy ways to deal with failure.\u00a0 You could do nothing but blame others.\u00a0 You could ignore the failure and end up repeating it.\u00a0 You could fear failure so much that you never take any risks.\u00a0 You could internalize a failure, allowing that failure to define your worth.\u00a0 You could give up because of a failure.<\/p>\n<p>But what is the healthy way to deal with failure?\u00a0 In the end Peter\u2019s story shows that, when you respond to failure the right way, failure can actually be your friend.\u00a0 In a message called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thrivechurch.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214&amp;id=2ca5ea1ab0&amp;e=b608fe02a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thrivechurch.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214%26id%3D2ca5ea1ab0%26e%3Db608fe02a2&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1758141826006000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Xf77Xyw6m2wITxf2gX3Hf\">\u201cA Friend Called Failure\u201d (recorded April 14, 2019 at Thrive Church)<\/a>, I shared from Peter\u2019s denial of Jesus five ways that failure can be your friend:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Failure gives you a chance to learn and grow.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Failure shows us our need for God.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Failure helps you succeed.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>4.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Failure gives God room to write a greater story with your life.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>5.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Failure gives us a chance to experience God\u2019s grace.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In that message I also share 4 ways you can respond to failure.<\/p>\n<p>In our passage today, Peter disowns Jesus three times.\u00a0 Later on in John 21, Jesus would intentionally restore Peter three times.\u00a0 It goes to show that\u00a0<strong>for every failure we experience, Jesus has equal portions of grace and mercy to cover us<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve failed so many times, but God\u2019s grace is always there to catch me when I do.\u00a0 His Word promises that somehow He will use even my failures to write a greater story than I could write myself.\u00a0 He\u2019ll do the same with you if you let Him.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When you have the right attitude toward failure, failure can be not a gravestone marking your death, but a stepping stone to your destiny.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Thank You Jesus that no matter how many times I\u2019ve failed Your grace has been there to meet me.\u00a0 I pray that I would have a healthy perspective on success and failure.\u00a0 Thank You that my worth is not defined by my performance.\u00a0 Rather my worth was settled at the cross where You gave Your life for me.\u00a0 Knowing that You are with me, may I live courageously for You today.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
