So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 11:\u00a0\u00a0Who is \u201cthe one who makes men holy\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0Who is \u201cthose who are made holy\u201d? You, me and everyone else who is currently living on earth and trusting in Jesus Christ as Saviour.\u00a0\u00a0We are being made holy by Jesus, the holy one who makes others holy.\u00a0\u00a0And yet\u00a0<strong>even though Jesus is holy and we are only in the process of being made holy, Jesus humbly still puts himself in the same boat as us, not ashamed to call us his family, his brothers and sisters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>This shows us the amazing humility and love of Jesus for us.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<strong>Hebrews 2:12-13 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He says, &#8220;I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And again, &#8220;I will put my trust in him.&#8221; And again he says, &#8220;Here am I, and the children God has given me.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 12-13:\u00a0\u00a0 Here the writer of Hebrews quotes 3 verses from the Old Testament (Psalm\u00a022:22; Isaiah\u00a08:17\u00a0and Isaiah\u00a08:18).\u00a0 He credits Jesus with speaking these verses.\u00a0 What can we learn from this?\u00a0 First, according to the writer of Hebrews, these Old Testament verses are Jesus\u2019 own words.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Jesus, the eternal Son of God, inspired the writing of the Old Testament.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Second, the writer of Hebrews is making the point that by speaking these verses,\u00a0<strong>Jesus was identifying himself with humanity.<\/strong>\u00a0 For example, if Jesus says, \u201cI will declare your name to my brothers and sisters\u201d (Psalm\u00a022:22), he is putting himself on the same level as human beings, calling us brothers and sisters.\u00a0 If Jesus says, \u201cI will put my trust in Him (i.e. the Father)\u201d (Isaiah\u00a08:17), he\u2019s showing that like us he is depending on His Heavenly Father and trusting in Him.\u00a0 If Jesus says, \u201cHere am I, and the children God has given me\u201d (Isaiah\u00a08:18), Jesus is showing that he stands on the side of people.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hebrews 2:14-15 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death&#8211;that is, the devil&#8211;<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 14-15:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Why did Jesus share in our humanity and become human like us?\u00a0\u00a0His first reason was to destroy Satan.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0By becoming human, living a perfect life, dying as any one of us would die and then rising again from death, Jesus showed that he was greater than Satan \u201cwho had the power of death\u201d and that those who trust in Him are no longer bound by death or the fear of death.\u00a0\u00a0Praise God!\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus there is victory over death and the fear of death!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hebrews\u00a02:16\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham&#8217;s descendants.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 16:\u00a0\u00a0Jesus didn\u2019t go through all this trouble for angels, but for us.\u00a0\u00a0Isn\u2019t it amazing that though we were made a little lower than the angels, Jesus bypasses the angels and goes one step lower to find us and serve us?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hebrews 2:17-18 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.<br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 17-18:\u00a0\u00a0Here we learn a second reason why Jesus had to become human.\u00a0\u00a0The first was so that he could destroy Satan who held the power of death (v14).\u00a0<strong>The second reason is so that Jesus could relate to us, understand our struggles, relate to our temptations, and in so doing be an effective, merciful, compassionate and faithful high priest.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0What is a high priest?\u00a0\u00a0One who stands in the gap between God and sinners.\u00a0\u00a0To be the most effective bridge between holy God and sinful humanity, Jesus the Son of God became human so that, being fully human and fully man, he could touch both sides \u2013 divinity and humanity \u2013 and be our perfect high priest.<\/p>\n<p><em>For today\u2019s closing prayer, let me share with you the lyrics of a song I once wrote based on Hebrews 2:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You were made like me in my humanity<br \/>\nSo that You could be a merciful high priest<br \/>\nAnd though You were a king it was through suffering<br \/>\nThat Your perfection came and so now I\u2019m free.<br \/>\nAnd You\u2019re not ashamed to call me brother<br \/>\nThough You are perfect in every way.<br \/>\nFor the One who is Holy<br \/>\nAnd the ones who are made holy<br \/>\nAre of one family, all because You shared in my humanity.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Hebrews 2:11-18.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p>Hebrews 2:11 (NIV)\u00a0<br \/>\n11\u00a0\u00a0Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family.
