And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On verses 1-2:\u00a0\u00a0Ezra learns that his fellow Israelite men, including priests, Levites, leaders and officials, have sinned by marrying foreign women who do not believe in the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0In doing so, they disobeyed God\u2019s command not to marry an unbeliever.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>What is so bad, harmful and dangerous about marrying someone who does not believe in the Lord?<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thrivechurch.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214&amp;id=ae59d73608&amp;e=b608fe02a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thrivechurch.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214%26id%3Dae59d73608%26e%3Db608fe02a2&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574117682946000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFSofkawGX_DwoUW2NWWl72GH3FMw\">Click HERE\u00a0for 3 reasons why the Bible repeatedly warns Christians not to \u201cyoke themselves to an unbeliever\u201d.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Ezra 9:3-6 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0When I heard this, I tore my tunic and cloak, pulled hair from my head and beard and sat down appalled.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of this unfaithfulness of the exiles. And I sat there appalled until the evening sacrifice.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Then, at the evening sacrifice, I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands spread out to the\u00a0LORD\u00a0my God\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0and prayed\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On verses 3-4:\u00a0\u00a0Ezra is appalled and upset at his fellow Israelites for sinning in such a foolish and blatant way.\u00a0\u00a0He tears his clothes and pulls out his hair, which were traditional signs of mourning.\u00a0\u00a0Wisely Ezra does not speak right away to anyone.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, Ezra waits until the evening sacrifice to speak, and when he does speak it\u2019s a desperate prayer to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When you receive upsetting news, let your first instinct be to run to God with your pain.\u00a0\u00a0Instead of doing something you will later regret, go to God first.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Sit in His presence.\u00a0\u00a0He is a God who knows you, loves you and who rises to show you compassion.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Ezra 9:13-14 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0&#8220;What has happened to us is a result of our evil deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins have deserved and have given us a remnant like this.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Shall we again break your commands and intermarry with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us, leaving us no remnant or survivor?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On verses 6-15:\u00a0\u00a0When people around us sin, we can turn a blind eye, we can vilify them, or we can stand in the gap on their behalf.\u00a0\u00a0Ezra chose to do the latter.\u00a0\u00a0He begins to confess sin and intercede on behalf of the people.\u00a0\u00a0As Ezra prays, notice that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ezra identifies with the sinners.\u00a0\u00a0He does not say, \u201cLook at what those sinful people have done!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Instead, he takes ownership of the peoples\u2019 sin and says, \u201cWe have sinned\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ezra is sincerely ashamed and remorseful because of the sin (v6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ezra recognizes that it\u2019s because of these sinful ways that his people have been subject to attack, captivity and humiliation in the past (v7, 13)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ezra does not take for granted the grace that God has shown him and his people (v8-9)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ezra makes no excuse for the peoples\u2019 sin.\u00a0\u00a0He acknowledges that \u201cwe have disregarded the commands you gave\u201d (v10-12).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What Ezra did for his people reminds me of what Jesus would later do for all of us, except that Jesus would go to a far greater extent.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus would identify with us sinners, even assuming the penalty for our sin by dying on a cross.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus didn\u2019t turn a blind eye to our sin or condemn us for our sin.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, He saw our sinful state and decided to be condemned in our place.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus did what only He the Son of God could do: save us from our sin.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Praise God that just as the Israelites had a priest like Ezra who tore his clothes and stood in the gap for them, we have someone even greater \u2013 Jesus our great high priest &#8211; who tore his flesh and stood in the gap for us to make forgiveness and reconciliation with God possible.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lord Jesus, thank You so much that when we had sinned blatantly against God, You came, identified with us sinners, and stood in the gap for us.\u00a0\u00a0Because Your commands are not given to limit our happiness but to maximize it, I pray for every single Christian who wants to get married and who is reading this GAME sharing.\u00a0\u00a0May they not yoke themselves to an unbeliever, but look for a life partner who believes in You and trusts You, for the sake of their own happiness and for the sake of Your glory.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Ezra 9:1-15.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p>Ezra 9:1-2 (NIV)\u00a0<br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, &#8220;The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians and Amorites.\u00a0<br \/>\n2\u00a0\u00a0They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled the holy race with the peoples around them.
