Today\u2019s passage is Nehemiah 11:1-36.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n

Nehemiah 11:1-2 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns.
\n2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The people commended all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
\n<\/em>
\nOn verses 1-36:\u00a0\u00a0Jerusalem was underpopulated and underdeveloped, with most Jews preferring to live in the neighbouring towns.\u00a0\u00a0Through a system of casting lots, 1 out of every 10 were to live in Jerusalem, while the other 9 could stay in their own towns.\u00a0\u00a0Anyone who volunteered to live in Jerusalem was commended.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This final chapter of Nehemiah lists various Israelites who moved to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0When I think about the old city of Jerusalem in Nehemiah\u2019s time, I can\u2019t help but compare it to the \u201cnew Jerusalem\u201d, the heavenly city that Christians get to live in for eternity.\u00a0\u00a0This new Jerusalem is described in Scriptures such as Revelation 21 and Hebrews\u00a012:22.\u00a0\u00a0It is so different from the Jerusalem described in Nehemiah 10.\u00a0\u00a0For example:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Old Jerusalem is a city on earth.\u00a0\u00a0New Jerusalem is a city in heaven (Hebrews\u00a012:22; Revelation 21:2, 10).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. In old Jerusalem, residents were constantly afraid of being attacked.\u00a0\u00a0In the new Jerusalem, there is safety and security for everyone who lives there.\u00a0\u00a0New Jerusalem is a place where \u201cthere will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain\u201d (Revelation 21:4).\u00a0\u00a0For God Himself lives with them there and \u201cHe will wipe every tear from their eyes\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. In old Jerusalem, prosperity was a thing of the past and poverty was rampant.\u00a0\u00a0In the new Jerusalem, the city is pure gold and even the city walls are made of precious stones (Revelation 21:18-21).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. In old Jerusalem, people worshiped the Lord at a man-made temple that would eventually be destroyed.\u00a0\u00a0In the new Jerusalem, there is no man-made temple, for \u201cthe Lord Almighty and the Lamb [Jesus] are its temple\u201d (Revelation\u00a04:22).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          1. In old Jerusalem, there was only natural light for half the day.\u00a0\u00a0In the new Jerusalem, there is no BC Hydro, Fortis or utility bills to pay.\u00a0\u00a0For \u201cthe city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.\u201d (Revelation\u00a04:23).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            1. No one wanted to live in old Jerusalem, whereas in the new Jerusalem, kings will bring their splendour there (Revelation\u00a04:24) and \u201cthe glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it\u201d (Revelation\u00a04:26).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                \n
              1. In old Jerusalem, sin continues.\u00a0\u00a0But in the new Jerusalem, sin is no longer an issue.\u00a0\u00a0As Revelation\u00a021:27\u00a0says, \u201cNothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.\u201d (Revelation\u00a021:27)\u00a0\u00a0The new Jerusalem is not tainted by sin and brokenness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Praise God that through Jesus Christ we have citizenship in, and a ticket to, the greatest city of all, located in heaven itself.\u00a0\u00a0Thank You, Lord, that when our lives on earth are through, we get to live in the greatest city of all with You.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
