when he opens his eyes, all is gone.

On verses 16-19: The third big consequence is how fleeting is the wealth chaser’s empire. Though for a short season “he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay” (v16), his wealth doesn’t last into eternity. Though he lived in a mansion, his house is “like a moth’s cocoon” or “a hut made by a watchman” (v18), bound to be vacated and destroyed one day. Though he feels secure in his wealth, his wealth will not accompany him into eternity (v19). Speaking of moths, verse 18 reminds me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:19-21: “19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Job 27:20-23 (NIV)
<sup>20 </sup> Terrors overtake him like a flood;
