Today\u2019s passage is Job 30:16-31.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n

Job 30:16-19 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“And now my life ebbs away;\u00a0days of suffering grip me.
\n17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Night pierces my bones;\u00a0my gnawing pains never rest.
\n18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0In his great power [God] becomes like clothing to\u00a0me;\u00a0he binds me like the neck of my garment.
\n19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He throws me into the mud,\u00a0and I am reduced to dust and ashes.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 16-31:\u00a0\u00a0Here Job complains about the significant physical pain he is in due to a disease he has contracted.\u00a0\u00a0Some scholars believe this disease may have been a skin condition like pemphigus foliaceus.\u00a0\u00a0According to the Bible Knowledge Commentary:<\/p>\n

\u201c[t]his disease, as attested by physicians today, matches the symptoms of Job’s afflictions\u2014inflamed, ulcerous sores (Job 2:7<\/a>), itching (v. 8<\/a>), degenerative changes in facial skin (vv. 7<\/a>,\u00a012<\/a>), loss of appetite (3:24<\/a>), depression (3:24-25<\/a>), loss of strength (6:11<\/a>), worms in the boils (7:5<\/a>), running sores (7:5<\/a>), difficulty in breathing (9:18<\/a>), darkness under the eyes (16:16<\/a>), foul breath (19:17<\/a>), loss of weight (19:20<\/a>;\u00a033:21<\/a>), continual pain (30:17<\/a>), restlessness (30:27<\/a>), blackened skin (30:30<\/a>), peeling skin (30:30<\/a>), and fever (30:30<\/a>). Whatever exact ailment Job had, Job believes that God is behind his sickness.\u00a0\u00a0Job believes that God is actively trying to cause him physical pain.\u00a0\u00a0He describes God like a silent assassin who beats him up the way Agent 007 would beat up his enemies:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHe throws me into the mud, and I am reduced to dust and ashes.\u00a0\u00a0I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer; I stand up, but you merely look at me.\u00a0\u00a0You turn on me ruthlessly; with the might of your hand you attack me.\u00a0\u00a0You snatch me up and drive me before the wind; you toss me about in the storm\u201d (v19-22).\u00a0\u00a0For Job it\u2019s not just the physical pain of the disease, but the stress and fear of not knowing when or if it will get better.\u00a0\u00a0Thus he says, \u201cmy harp is tuned to mourning, and my flute to the sound of wailing\u201d (v31).<\/p>\n

Is this how God treats His children?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Is God actively trying to cause Job, or any person, physical pain through sickness?\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t believe so.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Remember that most people in the Old Testament believed that everything, both good and bad, came from God.\u00a0\u00a0To them, God was the bringer of life\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>death, health\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>sickness.\u00a0\u00a0But then Jesus appears on the scene and comes to show us a more defined picture of what God is really like. Jesus shows us that God is our Heavenly Father who loves us, whose agenda is not to kill, steal and destroy our lives, but to give us life.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus came to show us a God who heals people of their diseases, restores their bodies to health, and who even raises the dead.\u00a0Whenever Jesus did any miracle in relation to a person\u2019s health, it was always about restoring and healing a person\u2019s body, not destroying it.\u00a0\u00a0From Jesus we see that the hand of God does not bring disease but healing, not destruction but restoration, not death but life.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s also why we as God\u2019s children, made to be conformed to the image of His Son Jesus, are encouraged to pray for people\u2019s healing, never for their destruction (James 5:14-16).\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s because God Himself is a Healer, not a destroyer.<\/p>\n

So whenever you encounter sickness, either in your own body or in someone else\u2019s, do not attribute the sickness to God as if God were the one making the person sick.\u00a0\u00a0God may allow sickness in your life \u2013 and always for the greater purpose of displaying His power and glory through it (John 9:3) \u2013 but God is not the author of sickness.<\/p>\n

Heavenly Father<\/strong>, thank You for showing us who You really are through Your Son Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0Thank You that You are not the author of any sickness I or my loved ones experience.\u00a0\u00a0Any time You allow sickness it is for the greater purpose of showing Your glory and power through it.\u00a0\u00a0Holy Spirit come and fill me today.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
