{"id":7994,"date":"2020-03-01T20:00:28","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T03:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/?p=7994"},"modified":"2020-03-01T18:43:43","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T01:43:43","slug":"job36_17-33","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/job36_17-33\/","title":{"rendered":"Put Your Hope in God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Job 36:17-33 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Job+36%3A17-33&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7996 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/200302.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/200302.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/200302-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/200302-450x225.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Job 36:17-33. \u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Job 36:17 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 17: \u00a0Much like Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar before him, Elihu accuses Job of being wicked, saying that the difficulty that has beset Job is Job\u2019s punishment for being wicked (v17). \u00a0<strong>Praise God that when others betray us, wrongly accuse us or unfairly speak ill of us, Jesus stands at our side to support us.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As 2 Timothy 4:17 says, \u201cBut the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength\u2026I was delivered from the lion&#8217;s mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Job 36:18-21 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress?<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes.<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 18-21: Elihu warns Job not to put his hope in four things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>his wealth (v18)<\/li>\n<li>his own efforts (v19)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cthe night\u201d (meaning the day that he dies) (v20)<\/li>\n<li>doing evil (v21)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is true that Job did express a longing for \u201cthe night\u201d, that is, his own death (for example, Job 6:8-9). \u00a0Job also spoke a lot about his \u201cmighty efforts\u201d to do good in Job 31.\u00a0 But you would be hard pressed to find any evidence that Job was tempted to put his hope in wealth or in doing evil.<\/p>\n<p>Still, what we can take from these verses is that\u00a0<strong>everyone puts their hope in something<\/strong>. \u00a0Some people put their hope in money, thinking that more will satisfy them and solve their problems. \u00a0Some people put their hope in their own efforts, thinking \u201cGod should let me into heaven because of all the good things I have done\u201d. \u00a0Some people put their hope in \u201cthe night\u201d and consider suicide as their solution.\u00a0 Some people put their hope in doing evil.\u00a0 Today\u00a0<strong>may we not put our hope in any of these things, but \u201cput your hope in the LORD<\/strong>, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.\u201d (Psalm 130:7) \u00a0As Psalm 20:7-8, \u201cSome trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.\u201d<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<strong>Job 36:22-23 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, &#8216;You have done wrong&#8217;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 22-23: \u00a0<strong>There is no one like our God.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0He is both powerful (\u201cexalted in his power\u201d) and wise (\u201cwho is a teacher like Him?\u201d) (v22). He isn\u2019t a copy of someone else; He\u2019s totally original (\u201cWho has prescribed his ways for him\u201d). \u00a0He is just (\u201cor said to him \u2018You have done wrong\u2019\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Job 36:24-25 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Remember to extol\u00a0<strong>his<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>work<\/strong>, which men have praised in song.<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0All mankind has seen it; men gaze on it from afar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 24-25: \u00a0What is \u201chis work\u201d which Elihu tells Job to remember, which Elihu says men have praised in song, and which all mankind have seen and gaze on from afar? \u00a0I believe\u00a0<strong>\u201chis work\u201d is referring to God\u2019s work in creation<\/strong>, since in the upcoming chapters Elihu and later God Himself will speak at length about how awesome is God\u2019s creation. \u00a0But\u00a0<strong>when I think about \u201chis work\u201d here, I also think about Jesus\u2019 finished work on the cross<\/strong>. \u00a0The cross is one of the most universally recognized symbols in the world. \u00a0It represents Jesus\u2019 finished work of sacrificing his life for our sins.<\/p>\n<p>About creation and about the cross you can say the same thing: \u00a0\u201cAll mankind has seen it; men gaze on it from afar.\u201d\u00a0 The question is: having seen it, do people recognize it to be God\u2019s work? \u00a0<strong>Whenever we see His work in our lives, let\u2019s remember to praise it (\u201cextol it\u201d) and the Artist who created it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Job 36:26-33 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0How great is God&#8211;beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams;<br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion?<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea.<br \/>\n<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0This is the way he governs the nations and provides food in abundance.<br \/>\n<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark.<br \/>\n<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 26-33: \u00a0Rain (v27), clouds (v28), thunder (v29) and lightning (v30) \u2013 Elihu is talking about a storm. \u00a0But Elihu is not so much impressed by the storm as he is in awe of the God behind the storm.\u00a0 What can we learn from this?
