{"id":8628,"date":"2020-04-09T20:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-04-10T03:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/?p=8628"},"modified":"2020-04-05T19:32:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-06T02:32:00","slug":"obadiah1_1-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/obadiah1_1-21\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Reasons Pride Goes Before A Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Obadiah 1:1-21\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Obadiah+1%3A1-21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8629 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/200410.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/200410.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/200410-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/200410-450x225.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today we\u2019re doing a one day look at the book of Obadiah, one of the shortest books in the Bible and the shortest book in the Old Testament.\u00a0 Here is some background on the book of Obadiah that you may find helpful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very little is known about the author of this book, except that his name is Obadiah which means \u201cworshiper of Yahweh\u201d.\u00a0 Several individuals in the Old Testament were called Obadiah, although it is not clear which Obadiah wrote this book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The purpose of the book of Obadiah is to give a prophetic message and warning for the nation of Edom.\u00a0 The Edomites were perennial enemies of the Israelites.\u00a0 They were direct descendants of Esau, while the Israelites were direct descendants of Esau\u2019s younger twin brother Jacob (later known as Israel).\u00a0 Despite Esau being the first born, God blessed and tasked Jacob and his descendants, the Israelites, with the special calling of being His chosen people.\u00a0 The conflict between Esau and Jacob would carry on for centuries between the Edomites and the Israelites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>It is uncertain when Obadiah was written, although some scholars believe that it was written during the reign of King Jehoram of Judah in approximately 850 B.C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The book of Obadiah contains themes that are consistent with the rest of the prophecy books of the Old Testament, such as the justice of God, how pride goes before a fall, and how God is committed to protecting His people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Obadiah 1:1-21.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1:1-4 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Sovereign\u00a0LORD\u00a0says about Edom&#8211; We have heard a message from the\u00a0LORD: An envoy was sent to the nations to say, &#8220;Rise, and let us go against her for battle&#8221;&#8211;<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;See, I will make you small among the nations; you will be utterly despised.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, &#8216;Who can bring me down to the ground?&#8217;<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,&#8221; declares the\u00a0LORD.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 1-4:\u00a0 \u201cThe pride of your heart has deceived you\u201d (v3). \u00a0\u00a0One of the big messages of the book of Obadiah is that Edom\u2019s pride would result in her downfall.\u00a0 Here we see the first reason why pride goes before a fall.\u00a0 First,\u00a0<strong>pride causes deception<\/strong>.\u00a0 When I am prideful, I have a distorted perception of myself, of others, and of God.\u00a0 I will tend to overestimate myself and underestimate others and God.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1:5-7 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;If thieves came to you, if robbers in the night&#8211; Oh, what a disaster awaits you&#8211; would they not steal only as much as they wanted? If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes?<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But how Esau will be ransacked, his hidden treasures pillaged!<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0All your allies will force you to the border; your friends will deceive and overpower you; those who eat your bread will set a trap for you,\u00a0<strong>but you will not detect it<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 5-7:\u00a0 Here is the second reason pride goes before a fall:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>pride produces blind spots<\/strong>.\u00a0 As Obadiah writes in verse 7, traps will be set for Edom, \u201cbut you will not detect it\u201d (v7).\u00a0 When I am prideful, I become blind to my own weaknesses and shortcomings, which the enemy can then exploit.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1:8 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;In that day,&#8221; declares the\u00a0LORD, &#8220;will I not destroy the wise men of Edom, men of understanding in the mountains of Esau?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 8:\u00a0 A third reason pride goes before a fall:\u00a0<strong>pride is the enemy of wisdom<\/strong>.\u00a0 Pride and wisdom make awful roommates.\u00a0 Rather, pride and foolishness go hand in hand.\u00a0 Wisdom cannot live in any area in my life where pride has taken residence.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1: 9 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Your warriors, O Teman, will be terrified, and everyone in Esau&#8217;s mountains will be cut down in the slaughter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 9:\u00a0 A fourth reason pride goes before a fall:\u00a0<strong>God opposes the proud<\/strong>.\u00a0 No matter how strong, smart, experienced or well equipped we think we are, when we are prideful, God will oppose us.\u00a0 As 1 Peter 5:5 says, \u201cGod opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1:10-12 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You should not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 10-12:\u00a0 Notice that twice God, when talking to Edom, refers to Jacob (i.e. Israel) not as Edom\u2019s enemy but as Edom\u2019s brother.\u00a0 God tells Edom not to look down on his brother Jacob or rejoice in his destruction (v12).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God watches the way we treat our brothers and sisters.<\/strong>\u00a0 That goes for both our natural family as well as our spiritual family.\u00a0 God will also hold you accountable for the way we treat those we consider to be our enemies.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1:13-14 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor look down on them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 13-14:\u00a0 Notice that the phrase \u201cthe day of their trouble\u201d and \u201cthe day of their disaster\u201d keep getting repeated in verses 12 through 14.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God watches what we do when others are in trouble.<\/strong>\u00a0 Do we take advantage of them, ignore them, or do something to help them?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Obadiah 1:15-21 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;The day of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.<br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been.<br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will possess its inheritance.<br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame; the house of Esau will be stubble, and they will set it on fire and consume it. There will be no survivors from the house of Esau.&#8221; The\u00a0LORD\u00a0has spoken.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0People from the Negev will occupy the mountains of Esau, and people from the foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan will possess [the land] as far as Zarephath; the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the towns of the Negev.<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the\u00a0LORD&#8217;s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 15-21:\u00a0 Edom would be brought down while Israel would rise up and take over the land of Edom (v19, 21).\u00a0 This is similar to what Amos prophesied in Amos 9:12.\u00a0 After centuries of conflict between Edom and Israel, Israel would gain the upper hand over Edom.\u00a0 King Amaziah of Judah would conquer Edom (2 Kings 14:7) in approximately 600 B.C.\u00a0 By approximately 120 B.C.
