{"id":9502,"date":"2020-05-28T20:00:50","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T03:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/?p=9502"},"modified":"2020-05-25T18:34:30","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T01:34:30","slug":"revelation2_8-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/revelation2_8-17\/","title":{"rendered":"He&#8217;s Everything You Need"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Revelation 2:8-17\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+2%3A8-17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9503 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/200529a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/200529a.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/200529a-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/200529a-450x225.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Revelation 2:8-17.\u00a0\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Revelation 2:8 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 8:\u00a0 Smyrna was a wealthy port city, located about 35 miles north of Ephesus.\u00a0 Jesus describes Himself once again as \u201cthe First and the Last\u201d, meaning\u00a0<strong>Jesus existed before anything else in creation came into being, and He is the only One who will remain when everything else is gone.\u00a0 It all begins and ends with Jesus.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jesus is also the one \u201cwho died and came to life again\u201d \u2013 more on that below.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Revelation 2:9-11 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I know your afflictions and your poverty&#8211;yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 9-11:\u00a0 \u00a0The church in Smyrna was going through a difficult time, as they were being persecuted for their faith by a certain group who claimed to be the true Jews but whom Jesus calls \u201ca synagogue of Satan\u201d (v9).\u00a0 Based on Jesus\u2019 words, things were going to get harder before they got easier.\u00a0 More persecution was still to come.\u00a0 As Jesus says, \u201cthe devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days\u201d (v10).\u00a0 (\u201cTen days\u201d, according to some scholars, has been the subject of various interpretations.\u00a0 Some think it means a literal ten days; others think it means a general but limited period of time; others think \u201cten\u201d speaks to how complete and intense is the degree of difficulty that they will face).\u00a0 In any event, Jesus was right.\u00a0 On February 23, 155 A.D., approximately 60 years after the book of Revelation was written the church in Smyrna would face a heart-breaking situation when Polycarp, the pastor of the church in Smyrna, would be martyred for his faith.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, while sobering the church to the fact that a difficult road still lay ahead of them, Jesus also speaks words of comfort in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Jesus says that He is the one who died and rose again (v8).\u00a0 This is especially meaningful for the Smyrnan church, seeing as some of them would be martyred for their faith.\u00a0 It\u2019s as if Jesus is saying, \u201cChurch, remember that in Me there is victory over the grave.\u00a0 Death has no hold over Me or over you anymore.\u201d\u00a0 Because Jesus is greater than the grave, Jesus can tell the church not to be afraid of what they are about to suffer (v10a).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Second, Jesus says that \u201cI know your afflictions\u201d.\u00a0 Jesus knows what they\u2019re going through and will go through (v9).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Third, Jesus says that \u201cI know\u2026your poverty \u2013 yet you are rich\u201d (v9).\u00a0 Jesus is reminding the church that true riches come from trusting in Jesus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fourth, Jesus encourages them to be faithful, even to the point of death, and promises them a crown of life (v10b).\u00a0 He\u2019s helping them keep the end game in mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fifth, Jesus reminds them that those who overcome (i.e. those who hang onto faith in Jesus) \u201cwill not be hurt at all by the second death\u201d (v11). What is the \u201csecond death\u201d?\u00a0 The second death refers to complete and permanent separation from God after we physically die.\u00a0 While every single person on earth will go through the first death (the death of our physical bodies), those who trust in Jesus as their Saviour cannot be hurt by the second death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When you\u2019re going through a very difficult time, remember this<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Jesus knows what you\u2019re going through and has compassion toward you.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"2\"><strong>Because Jesus conquered the grave, we have hope for tomorrow and do not need to fear death.<\/strong>\u00a0 Because of Jesus, death is swallowed up by life and we can say with the apostle Paul, \u201cWhere, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?\u201d (1 Corinthians 15:55)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"3\"><strong>The richest people in the world are the ones who have Jesus.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Revelation 2:12-16 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I know where you live&#8211;where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city&#8211;where Satan lives.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality.<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.<br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 12-16:\u00a0 Next Jesus has a message for the church in Pergamum.\u00a0 He tells the church in Pergamum that \u201cI know where you live \u2013 where Satan has his throne\u2026where Satan lives\u201d (v13).\u00a0 In other words, the city of Pergamum was full of wickedness and sinful living.\u00a0 Jesus says He understands the environment the Pergamum Christians were living in and He commends them for hanging onto their faith in Jesus, even when Antipas (probably a leader in the church of Pergamum) was put to death (v13).<\/p>\n<p>After speaking encouraging words, Jesus then moves on to the challenging part of his message:\u00a0 He rebukes the church in Pergamum for following the teaching of Balaam.\u00a0 Like Balaam in the Old Testament (Numbers 22-25 and 31:15-16), it appears that the Christians in Pergamum were in love with money and were encouraging God\u2019s people to marry unbelievers (\u201ceating food sacrificed to idols\u201d) and commit sexual immorality.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Jesus also rebukes the church for holding to the teaching of the Nicolaitans, the details of whose false teachings have not survived to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Because the church in Pergamum had strayed from God\u2019s Word in terms of their lifestyle, Jesus tells them to repent; otherwise when He returns He will be coming after them with the sword of His Word (\u201cthe sword of my mouth\u201d) (v16).\u00a0 That\u2019s also why when Jesus first addresses the church in Pergamum, He calls Himself the One \u201cwho has the sharp, double-edged sword\u201d (v12).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>When we stray from God\u2019s Word in the way we live, what we need is the Word of God to show us the way back.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"2\">Jesus cares not about what we say we believe, but about how we live.\u00a0 Jesus expects His people to live out His commands.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"3\">Notice that\u00a0<strong>each time so far when Jesus addresses a church in Revelation,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the way Jesus describes Himself to that church speaks to a great need in that church<\/strong>.\u00a0 To the Ephesian church who needed to rebuild a close intimacy with Jesus, Jesus effectively calls Himself the One who keeps His church close to Himself (2:1).\u00a0 To the Smyrnan church who needed encouragement in the face of death, Jesus calls Himself the one \u201cwho died and came to life again\u201d (2:8).\u00a0 To the church in Pergamum who needed to be brought back in line with God\u2019s Word, Jesus calls Himself the One \u201cwho has the sharp, double-edged sword\u201d (2:12).\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Whatever season of life you are in and whatever difficulty you are facing, Jesus comes to you as the One who can meet that need.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Revelation 2:17a (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
