1 Chronicles 24:1-31  Click here for Bible Verses

Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is 1 Chronicles 24:1-31.  Let’s go!

1 Chronicles 24:3 (NIV)
With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelech a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering.

1 Chronicles 24:19 (NIV)
19  This was their appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the LORD, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their forefather Aaron, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

On verses 1-19:  Here we are given a list of the names of the priests and their families who led the Israelites in worship.  The priests were divided into 24 teams and each team was to serve two weeks per year.  During the remainder of the year the members of that team would be serving the community and teaching God’s Word.  Notice that there was an “appointed order of ministering” (v3, 19).  In other words, there was a system in place to organize the priests so that they knew when they were serving and who they were serving with.  With such a system in place, it helped to make sure that everyone had a part to play and that no one got burned out.

What can we learn from this?  To be effective, the church needs to be well organized.  It’s not enough to have talent, passion, a loving heart or good intentions.   It’s about doing the brainwork necessary to create systems that work and make ministry possible.

Just as the church needs to be well ordered, our private lives need thoughtful ordering as well.  Effective leaders are disciplined and well-organized.  No matter how smart, passionate or hard-working you may be, if you don’t have a well thought out system for managing your time and resources, you’re eventually going to burn out and miss God’s best for your life.

What is one area of your life, ministry, business, studies or relationships where you need to be better organized?

1 Chronicles 24:31 (NIV)
31  They also cast lots, just as their brothers the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.

On verses 20-31:  Here the Chronicler lists the rest of the Levites who would assist the priests and help facilitate the Israelites’ worship of the Lord.  Notice that whether it was organizing the priests (v5) or organizing the rest of the Levites (v31), David organized them impartially by casting lots.  What can we learn from this?  When you lead people, aim to be as impartial and fair as possible, especially when organizing people who are peers and equals.  Impartiality is one defining characteristic of a wise, godly leader (see Ephesians 6:9; 1 Timothy 5:21; James 2:1,9 and 3:17).

Heavenly Father, thank You that all wisdom comes from You.  I pray that I would be a wise leader who organizes the time and resources You have given me thoughtfully and well.  I also pray that my leadership would be pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere (James 3:17).  In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
