Hi GAMErs,
Today’s passage is 1 Chronicles 28:1-10. Let’s go!
1 Chronicles 28:4-6 (NIV)
4 “Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me from my whole family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel.
5 Of all my sons–and the LORD has given me many–he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.
6 He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
On verses 1-6: In these verses, David addresses the leaders of Israel (political officials, tribal leaders, military commanders, warriors and others). First, David recounts how he originally had it in his heart to build a temple for the Lord where the ark of God could rest (v2), but that God told him that he was not the one to build the temple due to his having shed other people’s blood in battle (v3). David then recounts how God hand-picked him to be king over Israel (v4). God also chose his son Solomon to be his successor (v5) and to build the temple that David had in mind (v6). Notice how often, especially in verses 4-6, the word “chose” or “chosen” comes up over and over.
What can we learn from this? God does not pick His servants randomly or by accident. God is specific, intentional and purposeful in the choices He makes. Likewise, if you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, over and over the New Testament says that you have been chosen (Romans 11:5; Ephesians 1:11; Colossians 3:12; 1 Peter 2:9; 1 Thessalonians 1:4; Revelation 17:14). God did not choose you by accident or at random, but intentionally, deliberately, and specifically. You are God’s chosen one!
1 Chronicles 28:7 (NIV)
7 I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.’
On verse 7: God promised that He would establish Solomon’s kingdom forever if Solomon was unswerving in carrying out God’s commands. But Solomon wasn’t, not even close. As a result his kingdom did not last. However, there was another descendant of David who would unswervingly carry out God’s commands. His name is Jesus. As a result of Jesus’ obedience to His Father, His Father would give Him the name that is above every name and a kingdom that would last forever. Like Solomon, we did not fully obey the Lord and did not deserve to be part of His eternal kingdom. But praise God that where Solomon failed, Jesus succeeded, and Jesus’ obedience has won us a place in God’s kingdom forever.
1 Chronicles 28:8 (NIV)
8 “So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the LORD your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever.
On verse 8: David uses his unique authority and influence to tell these high profile leaders of Israel to carefully follow God’s commands. David’s reason: “that you may possess the land God had given them and pass it on as an inheritance for generations to come.” What can we learn from this?
- There are certain people in your life over whom you have unique influence. Use that influence to lead them to God’s Word.
- God gives us His commands not to limit our freedom but to expand our territory, so that we and the generations that come after us may be blessed.
1 Chronicles 28:9 (NIV)
9 “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.
On verse 9: David now turns his attention to his son Solomon, telling him to fear and serve God with his whole heart and mind. There are at least three important truths we can learn from verse 9:
- God made you to serve him with your whole heart and mind.
- God does not just look at what you do, but why you do it. (“the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts”)
- If you seek the Lord, you will find Him. If you forsake Him, He will reject you.
1 Chronicles 28:10 (NIV)
10 Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a temple as a sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.”
On verse 10: Here David affirms that his son Solomon is the one God chose to build the temple. Then David says, “Be strong and do the work.” What can we learn from this? It’s God’s job to do the choosing. It’s our job to be strong and do the work. Don’t just rest on the fact that God has chosen you. Put your hands to work. When we respond to God’s call with courage and hard work, the results are powerful. The Biblical formula for success can be written this way: God’s call + faith + wisdom + hard work = Destiny.
