Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Deuteronomy 28:1-14.  Let’s go!

Deuteronomy 28:1-14 (NIV)
If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God:
You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock–the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.
Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.
The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.
The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways.
10  Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you.
11  The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity–in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground–in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you.
12  The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.
13  The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.
14  Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.

On verses 1-14, Moses tells the Israelites about the kinds of blessings God will pour out on His people if they obey His commands:

– He will bless them no matter where they are (Verse 3: “You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.”)
– He will bless not just them but the generations after them (Verse 4a: “The fruit of your womb will be blessed…”)
– He will bless their finances, businesses, professions and careers (Verse 4b: “…and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock–the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.”)
– He will bless their food and supplies (Verse 5: “Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.”)
– He will bless them at all times – at night when they come in and during the day when they go out (Verse 6)
– He will bless them with victory in their struggles and make them unstoppable (Verse 7)
– He will bless them financially (Verse 8a – their “barns”)
– He will bless them with success (Verse 8b – “everything you put your hand to”)
– He will bless them in all the places He has called them to go (Verse 8c)
– He will bless them in their role as God’s representatives in this world (Verse 9 – “establish His holy people”).  Other people will see that they are called by God (Verse 10) and respect (“fear”) them for it
– He will bless them with prosperity in all areas of life, causing them to excel and be a blessing to others (Verse 11-13)
Now what’s the catch?  All these blessings were conditional on the people obeying God fully and completely.  In other words, you only get these blessings “If you fully obey the Lord and carefully follow all His commands” (v1) and “If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God…and carefully follow them” (v13).

The problem is: how many of us have fully obeyed God and carefully followed all His commands?  None of us have…except one:  Jesus Christ.

Jesus obeyed all of God’s commands and met every requirement of God’s law.  So Jesus earned all of the blessings we read about in Deuteronomy 28:1-13.

And the awesome news is:  starting on the day you became a Christian and trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are found in Jesus Christ (Romans 8:1; Romans 16:7; 1 Corinthians 1:30)!  That means all the blessings Christ earned through His obedience flow to us as well because we are in Christ!

You might wonder, “How come I don’t see these blessings in my life?”  It might just be that you’re not looking close enough and that you’re taking some blessings for granted.  Or/and it could be that God is writing a greater story with your life.  Either way, faith in Christ is the key to unlocking all of God’s blessings on your life.  So proclaim today that You are blessed because of Jesus!  Because Jesus 100% obeyed, you are 100% blessed!

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for being a God who loves to bless Your children.  Thank You that when we didn’t deserve and couldn’t earn Your blessing, You found another way to bless us:  through Jesus Christ.  Now because of Jesus Christ, all the blessings in Deuteronomy 28:1-14 are mine too.  I am blessed because of Jesus!  Thank You!  In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN!
