Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is Ezekiel 35:10-15.  Let’s go!

Ezekiel 35:10-12 (NIV)
10  “‘Because you have said, “These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession of them,” even though I the LORD was there,
11  therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.
12  Then you will know that I the LORD have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, “They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.”

On verses 10-12:  The “two nations and countries” being referred to in verse 10 are the southern kingdom of Judah and the northern kingdom of Israel.  The Edomites boasted that they would one day take possession of Judah and Israel (v10), especially given that Judah and Israel were in a weakened state (v12b –“They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour”).
Apparently the Edomites spoke these boastful words out of anger, envy and hatred toward the Israelites (v11).  Thus God promises to treat the Edomites with the same anger, envy and hatred with which the Edomites treated the Israelites (v11b-11).  As Jesus says in Matthew 7:2, “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

What can we learn from this?   Here God holds Edom accountable for speaking envious and hateful words (v11) about the Israelites.  Similarly, God watches how we speak about others.  When we speak envious or hateful words about others, God will hold us accountable.

Ezekiel 35:13 (NIV)
13  You boasted against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.

On verse 13:  Have you ever spoken against God without restraint, blaming God, cursing God, or charging God with wrongdoing?  God takes note of all the times when people speak against Him and will hold people accountable for careless words (Matthew 12:36).  That includes every time people use God’s Son Jesus’ name in vain.  So be especially careful with your words when speaking to God or about God while you’re angry.  If you have spoken careless about God or to God, be sure to confess this to God and receive His mercy and forgiveness, paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Ezekiel 35:14-15 (NIV)
14  This is what the Sovereign LORD says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.
15  Because you rejoiced when the inheritance of the house of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, O Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the LORD.'”

On verses 14-15:  Just as God would hold Edom accountable for mistreating the Israelites, so God watches how others treat His children and will hold them accountable for it.  God watches how others treat you as a child of God.  God also watches how you treat other children of God.

Heavenly Father, thank You that You mindfully watch how others treat me, as well as how I treat others.  In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
