Hi GAMErs,
Today’s passage is Genesis 24:52-67. Let’s go!
Genesis 24:52-61 (NIV)
52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.
53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother.
54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my master.”
55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; then you may go.”
56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the LORD has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.”
57 Then they said, “Let’s call the girl and ask her about it.”
58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” “I will go,” she said.
59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”
61 Then Rebekah and her maids got ready and mounted their camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
On verses 52-61: Willingly Rebekah leaves her home and goes back with Abraham’s servant to become Isaac’s wife. To leave her family, friends and homeland and to move to a new land to marry a stranger was no easy task. Earlier in Genesis 24 we learned that Rebekah had the heart of an excellent and humble servant. Here in these verses we see that Rebekah was also brave. It’s no wonder God used Rebekah to help accomplish God’s plan of building a family of nations through Abraham, a family which would ultimately include you and me and everyone else who places their trust in Jesus Christ. Nothing in Genesis so far seems to suggests that Rebekah had any idea of God’s bigger plan to use her life in this way. Most likely, Rebekah was just faithfully taking the next step that she believed God was showing her and had no idea how much God would end up using her decision to become Isaac’s wife.
What can we learn from this? God loves to use women and men who are humble, willing and brave to accomplish His purposes on this earth. We cannot fathom all that God wants to do in and through our lives. If God were to show us, we would probably freak out. Instead, God leads us one step at a time. Don’t put pressure on yourself to have everything about your future figured out now. You don’t have to. With faith just take the next step that God is leading you to take.
Genesis 24:62-67 (NIV)
62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.
63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.
64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel
65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.
66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.
67 Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
On verses 62-67: What an incredible scene that must have been for Isaac and Rebekah to meet for the first time. Isaac is going to meditate (presumably on the Lord) when he sees camels approaching carrying his chief servant and Rebekah. There Isaac and Rebekah meet for the first time. They get married. Verse 67 adds that Isaac “loved her” and “was comforted after his mother’s death”.
How does God comfort us when we lose people, especially those who are dear to us? In part God comforts us by bringing new people into our lives, people we did not expect whom God would use to provide special comfort, help, healing and joy to us, even while we may still be grieving the loss of someone who is no longer with us. If you are grieving and mourning, give yourself the time and space to do that, but as you grieve and mourn, don’t miss the new blessings that God is bringing into your life.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Rebekah’s courage to leave her family, home country and everything that was familiar to her so that she could become Isaac’s wife. We are blessed because through her decision Christ would ultimately come into our lives. Thank You that even in times of grief and mourning, You are bringing new blessings into our lives, which we pray we wouldn’t miss or take for granted. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
