Hebrews 13:1-9 (CLICK HERE FOR BIBLE VERSES)
Hi GAMErs!
Today’s passage is Hebrews 13:1-9. Let’s go!
Hebrews 13:1-9 (NIV)
1 Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters.
2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
3 Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
6 So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them.
On verses 1-9: While the book of Hebrews contains more doctrine than most other New Testament books, it also contains some of the most important teaching on how to practically live out your life as a Christian. In these verses, the writer of Hebrews gives us 7 actions he wants his readers to take in light of all that Jesus has done for us:
1. Keep loving your fellow Christians as brothers and sisters. Treat them as family (v1).
2. Show hospitality to strangers (v2). As a motivating reason, the writer of Hebrews alludes to times in the Old Testament where someone entertained a stranger who turned out to be an angel (see for example Genesis 18 and 19).
3. Serve prisoners and those who are mistreated (v3).
4. Honor God’s design for sex, that sex be reserved for those who are married to one another (v4).
5. Avoid idolizing money and be content with what you have, knowing that God is with you and for you (v5-6).
6. Appreciate your spiritual leaders. Take the good things you have seen in them and learned from them and apply them to your life (v7). Just as Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever (v8), aim for consistency.
7. Do not be carried away by strange teachings but keep centering yourself around the grace of God expressed in Jesus Christ (v9).
Which of the above actions do you need to start doing?
Father, thank You that Your Word doesn’t just give us a lot of information, but it leads us to transformation. May I not just be well-informed by Your Word, but may I be well-transformed by it, that my life would reflect Your powerful and living Word. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
