Hi GAMErs!
Today’s passage is Mark 5:1-10. Let’s go!
Mark 5:1-5 (NIV)
1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
On verses 1-5: Notice what happened when Satan got a hold of this man’s life: the man had unusual strength (v4) and yet he spent his days among dead people, hanging among the tombs (v3), cutting himself with stones (v5) and desperate for help. Similarly, those who play around with the occult or who allow Satan to take hold of their life may from time to time experience unusual strength, but that strength also comes with a haunting emptiness, a depression, a loneliness, great fear and a lack of peace. The fact that the word “tombs” keeps getting repeated (v2, v3, v5) suggests this: Satan will never lead you to a place of life but a place of death.
Mark 5:6-10 (NIV)
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me!”
8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
On verses 6-10: They say that a “legion” consists of 6,000 soldiers. The fact that the demons inside the man called themselves “Legion” suggests that there were many demons taking residence in this man.
People tried to subdue this demon-possessed man and their chains could not hold him down (v4). Yet this demon-possessed man falls at Jesus’ feet. What can we learn from this? No matter how powerful and numerous Satan’s forces are, they are no match for Jesus and they know it. That is why Philippians 2 says that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. For Jesus is the name above every name and is greater than all evil spirits put together.
Since there is superior authority in Jesus’ name, as a child of God may you use the name of Jesus to conquer whatever attacks from the enemy come your way.
Jesus, I worship You. You are the name above every name. At Your name every knee will bow, including the knees of Your enemies. Thank You that no matter what kind of bondage I may find myself in, with You there is freedom from bondage. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
