Hi GAMErs,
Today’s passage is 1 Chronicles 29:21-30. Let’s go!
1 Chronicles 29:22 (NIV)
22 They ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD that day. Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the LORD to be ruler and Zadok to be priest.
On verses 21-22: It touches my heart deeply to think that David’s last act as king of Israel, before he handed the reigns of his kingdom to his son Solomon, was to lead his people in worshiping the Lord, both through giving the most generous offering they could muster together (v1-9) and giving God praise through prayer and song (v10-20). And now, one day later, the people are at it again, giving God worship through generous sacrifices and offerings (v21). They eat and drink together with great joy before recognizing and anointing Solomon as their king and ruler (v22). What can we learn from this? The most important thing you can do with the power God has given you is lead others to know and worship the Lord. Like David, may you do it until you don’t have the power to do it anymore.
1 Chronicles 29:23-25 (NIV)
23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him.
24 All the officers and mighty men, as well as all of King David’s sons, pledged their submission to King Solomon.
25 The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before.
On verses 23-25: Here Solomon assumes the throne and the leaders of Israel (“all the officers and mighty men, as well as all of King David’s sons”) pledge their submission to him. As verse 25 says, God exalts Solomon and bestows splendor on him like no king over Israel ever had before. I believe these verses are pointing us forward to the day when centuries later, another Son of David – one greater than Solomon – would come and assume the throne, and at his name every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord. All honour, worship, splendor and majesty are due Him. His name is Jesus.
1 Chronicles 29:26-30 (NIV)
26 David son of Jesse was king over all Israel.
27 He ruled over Israel forty years–seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem.
28 He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.
29 As for the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer, the records of Nathan the prophet and the records of Gad the seer,
30 together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands.
On verses 26-30: This ends our look at the book of 1 Chronicles. While the book of 1 Chronicles contains hundreds of names beginning with Adam, it is David’s life that dominates this book. Out of 1 Chronicles’ 29 chapters, David’s life is intricately involved in 18 of them (chapters 11 to 29). In these chapters we see David’s greatness as well as his frailty, but most of all we see his heart for God. Beyond being a king, a warrior, a politician or a shepherd, David at his core was a worshiper. It is no wonder he is described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). My prayer for you and me is that, like David, we would be known as people after God’s own heart, people who despite our flaws and brokenness are best known for how we worshiped God and in so doing inspired and equipped the next generation to worship Him too.
Heavenly Father, thank You for all the powerful lessons we have learned from 1 Chronicles. With the time and the power You have given me, may I worship You and lead others to do the same. It’s the most important thing I can do in this life. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
