2 Samuel 22:44-51 (CLICK HERE FOR BIBLE VERSES)
Hi GAMErs,
Today’s passage is 2 Samuel 22:44-51. As usual, I encourage you to open your Bible and read the passage yourself first. See what you can glean with the Holy Spirit’s help. Then read the GAME sharing below. Let’s go!
Remember that God has 2 purposes in these verses. The first purpose of these verses is to recount history, to tell of what God had already done in David’s life, how God delivered David from his enemies and made him the head of nations. But there is a second purpose. It’s record prophecy and tells of what God would do in the future in and through the life of Jesus Christ. Let’s go!
2 Samuel 22:44-46 (NIV)
44 “You have delivered me from the attacks of my people; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know are subject to me,
45 and foreigners come cringing to me; as soon as they hear me, they obey me.
46 They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds.
On verses 44-46: God allowed David to suffer much at the hands of his enemies, but ultimately God exalted David as king and head over nations.
Likewise, centuries later God would later allow His Son Jesus to suffer much from the attacks of ruthless men who nailed him to a cross. But after Jesus suffered on the cross, God would give Jesus the name about every name. As Philippians 2:9-11 says, “God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee would bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”.
So just as God did for David, God delivered Jesus from the attacks of the peoples, preserved Jesus as king of the nations (v44), and exalted Jesus above his enemies and above every name (v48-49). Even those who don’t know Jesus will cower, tremble and bow before him one day (v45-46; Philippians 2:9-11).
2 Samuel 22:47-49 (NIV)
47 “The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior!
48 He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me,
49 who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from violent men you rescued me.
On verses 47-49: By maintaining a throne for David despite all that David had gone through, God showed that He was alive and faithful to His promises (2 Samuel 7:16). Likewise, by raising Jesus up from the dead and seating Him on the throne at His right hand, God showed that He is alive and faithful to His promises.
2 Samuel 22:50-51 (NIV)
50 Therefore I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to your name.
51 He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
On verses 50-51: David ends his song by praising God for the victories and kindness He gives. David sees how God’s kindness extends not just to him, but to all of his descendants forever who come after him (v51).
Likewise, God gave His Son Jesus great victories over our greatest enemies: Satan, sin and death. He showed Jesus the anointed one “unfailing kindness” when He raised Him up and exalted Him to the highest place. Those victories and that unfailing kindness which God showed to His Son Jesus, God also extends to all of us. For we are His descendants, who by faith find life through Him (v51). As part of His royal family, we are destined to rule and reign alongside our King Jesus for eternity.
Praise God. Just as verses 44-51 speak historically about David’s past, these same verses also speak prophetically about Jesus’ future, and ours too — that we are destined to reign together forever.
Father, thank You that You are alive and faithful to Your promises. Thank You for Your Son Jesus. He is my strong rock, my Saviour, the King over every nation and whose name is above every name. Thank You that through His name I have life and I am part of Your royal family. Thank You that You stooped down to make me great, and I am destined to reign with Christ forever. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
