The God Who Hears When You Call

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Daniel 9:15-27.  Let’s go!

Daniel 9:15-18 (NIV)
15  “Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong.
16  O Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our fathers have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us.
17  “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, O Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary.
18  Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.

On verses 15-18:  Why is Daniel not afraid to bring His requests before God?  It’s because though Daniel is acutely aware of God’s holiness as well as his and his people’s sin, Daniel also knows that God is full of mercy.  I love Daniel’s statement in verse 18: “We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.”

Interceding for Others

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Daniel 9:1-14.  Let’s go!

Daniel 9:1-2 (NIV)
1  In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom–
2  in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.

On verses 1-2:  Daniel had been reading the book of Jeremiah where Jeremiah predicts that the Jews of Jerusalem would be exiles and would only return to Jerusalem after 70 years.  See Jeremiah 25:11-12 and 29:10.  Jeremiah had given this prophecy found in Jeremiah 25:11-12 back in approximately 605 B.C. when Daniel would still have been a teenager.  Cyrus, king of Persia, would let the Jewish exiles return to Jerusalem in 538/537 B.C., which is approximately 68 years later.  How remarkable it is that Jeremiah’s prophecy was right.

Gabriel (A Discussion about Angels)

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Daniel 8:15-27.  Let’s go!

Daniel 8:15-27 (NIV)
15  While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man.
16  And I heard a man’s voice from the Ulai calling, “Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of the vision.”
17  As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”
18  While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me and raised me to my feet.
19  He said: “I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end.
20  The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia.

On verses 15-27:  Yesterday in discussing verses 1-14 we addressed the meaning of the visions that Daniel had seen about the two-horned ram, the shaggy goat, the large horn on the goat’s head as well as the little horn that would later rise up in power.  What strikes me here is WHO tells Daniel the meaning of these visions.  It was the angel Gabriel, who goes to Daniel, at the instructions of a voice from the Ulai River (presumably, the voice of the LORD).

The Greater King We Serve

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Daniel 8:1-14.  Let’s go!

Daniel 8:1-8 (NIV)
1  In the third year of King Belshazzar’s reign, I, Daniel, had a vision, after the one that had already appeared to me.
2  In my vision I saw myself in the citadel of Susa in the province of Elam; in the vision I was beside the Ulai Canal.
3  I looked up, and there before me was a ram with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later.
4  I watched the ram as he charged toward the west and the north and the south. No animal could stand against him, and none could rescue from his power. He did as he pleased and became great.

On verses 1-8:  While King Belshazzar was still king of the Babylonians, Daniel receives another vision, this time of an aggressive two-horned ram (representing two kings of Medo-Persia – v20) who is defeated by a large-horned goat (representing Greece – v21).  Some scholars equate the large horn with Alexander the Great.

The Winner of This Bout by Submission: God and His People

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Daniel 7:15-28.  Let’s go!

Daniel 7:15-18 (NIV)
15  “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.
16  I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. “So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things:
17  ‘The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.
18  But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever–yes, for ever and ever.’

On verses 15-18:  Still within his own dream, Daniel inquires as to their meaning of the visions he saw.  He is given a short explanation: the four great beasts he saw represent four kingdoms that will arise from the earth (v17).  In the end, however, it is God’s people (“the saints of the Most High” – v18) who will prevail and receive a kingdom that will last forever.
