What to Look for in a Leader

Today we begin the book of Titus, a letter that the apostle Paul wrote to one of his closest disciples and teammates Titus shortly after 64 AD.  Titus did not come from a Jewish background.  He was Greek.  Titus traveled with Paul on his mission trips (Galatians 2:1-3) and was a trusted assistant of Paul’s.  Afterwards, Paul left Titus to pastor the church they started in Crete.  The book of Titus is a follow up letter from Paul to Titus where Paul instructs Titus on how to lead and teach the church in Crete.  In it are some valuable truths and life lessons for us.

Today’s passage is Titus 1:1-9.  Let’s go!

Titus 1:1 (NIV) 
1  Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness–

On verse 1:  God’s truth is not just something God wants you to know for the sake of gaining more knowledge or for mere academic reasons.  Rather, knowing God’s truth is meant to lead to godliness.   God’s truth is not just informational; it’s transformational.  It is there not just to inform you, but to transform your heart, your mind and ultimately your behavior, to make you more godly, more like Christ.

祂是誰的子孫

馬太福音22: 41_46_祂是誰的子孫

41 法利賽人聚集的時候，耶穌問他們說： 42 「論到基督，你們的意見如何？祂是誰的子孫呢？」他們回答說：「是大衛的子孫。」 43 耶穌說：「這樣，大衛被聖靈感動，怎麼還稱祂為主說： 44 『主對我主說：你坐在我的右邊，等我把你仇敵放在你的腳下』？ 45 大衛既稱祂為主，祂怎麼又是大衛的子孫呢？」 46 他們沒有一個人能回答一言。從那日以後，也沒有人敢再問他什麼。

你可以想像到，當撒都該人和法利賽人把可以想到的難題都拿出來，卻考不倒耶穌時，那種心裡的無奈嗎？就在這時，耶穌反擊了，問他們一個他們不曾想過的問題：「論到基督，你們的意見如何？祂是誰的子孫呢？大衛既稱他為主，他怎麼又是大衛的子孫呢？」耶穌希望他們能藉著思考來明白祂的身份，可是人的思想何其有限。就是現在，也有很多人只喜歡耶穌的教導，卻無法接受耶穌是神基督的位份。

新約中有十七處將耶穌描寫為“大衛王的子孫”。 但是大衛生活在耶穌出生之前約一千年，耶穌怎麼可能是大衛的子孫？

有好幾次耶穌被因信而尋求憐憫或醫治的人們稱作“主啊，大衛的子孫”： 女兒被鬼附得很苦的婦人（太 15:22 ），坐在路旁的兩個瞎子（太 20:30 ），和瞎子巴底買（可 10:47 ）都向“大衛的子孫”呼喊求救。 他們給祂的尊稱宣告了對祂的信心。 稱他為“主”表達了他們認可祂的神性、統轄和權力，而稱祂為“大衛王的子孫”表明他們認祂為彌賽亞。 耶穌是應許中的彌賽亞，這意味著祂必是大衛的後裔。

最大的誡命

太福音22: 34_40_最大的誡命

34 法利賽人聽見耶穌堵住了撒都該人的口，他們就聚集。 35 內中有一個人是律法師，要試探耶穌，就問他說： 36 「夫子，律法上的誡命哪一條是最大的呢？」 37 耶穌對他說：「你要盡心、盡性、盡意愛主你的神。 38 這是誡命中的第一，且是最大的。 39 其次也相仿，就是要愛人如己。 40 這兩條誡命是律法和先知一切道理的總綱。」

這是耶穌在聖城的第二天，猶太人並沒有輕易放過祂。從猶太人最高議會的“三和林＂（Sanhedrin）領袖來質問耶穌的權柄，接著由法利賽人和希律黨人聯手問繳稅的問題，接著就是撒都該人問復活，現在輪到律法師（文士）上場。律法師也是聖經學研究師，律法自然是他們最拿手的。他們能不知道這個問題的答案嗎？他們是胸有成竹，企圖來羞辱耶穌的。因為他們認定在613條誡命中，有248條積極的誡命，365條消極的誡命。積極的誡命是要人當做哪些事，消極的誡命是不可以做哪些事。他們的問題便是針對積極的誡命而發，有那麼多該做的事，哪一件是最重要的？若是耶穌的回答不合他們的心意，那他們便可當眾羞辱耶穌，說祂沒有教導的資格。

其實在律法師當中也有不同的看法，有的人認為守安息日比其他誡命都重要，有的人認為獻祭比守誡命重要，有的人認為遵守割禮最重要。因此這也是他們之間一個無法解決的問題。信徒之間不也常常有類似的問題嗎？好像敬拜時，應該以儀式為重，或是隨意為主；要讓人覺得方便好呢？還是要讓人感受到敬拜的莊重？

Earthly Kingdoms Will fall, But Christ’s Kingdom Will Last Forever

Today’s passage is 2 Kings 25:8-30.  Let’s go!

2 Kings 25:21 (NIV) 
21  There at Riblah, in the land of Hamath, the king had them executed. So Judah went into captivity, away from her land. 

On 2 Kings 25:8-21: King Nebuchadnezzar has captured Judah’s capital city of Jerusalem and has deported Judah’s King Zedekiah along with approximately 10,000 Judahites to Babylon (v1-7). Now in these verses we see King Nebuchadnezzar setting fire to the temple of the Lord, the royal palace, all the houses and every important building in Jerusalem (v8-9).  He destroys Jerusalem’s defensive walls (v10).  He carries off almost all the remaining people back to Babylon with him, except for Jeremiah the prophet (see Jeremiah 39:11-14) and the city’s poorest of the poor who are allowed to stay to work the vineyards (v11-12).  He hollows out the Lord’s temple of everything valuable (v13-17) and executes the priests and leaders in Jerusalem (v18-21).  Jerusalem has fallen.  

How God Expands His Territory in You

Today’s passage is 2 Kings 24:8-25:7.  Let’s go!

2 Kings 24:10-14 (NIV) 
10  At that time the officers of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon advanced on Jerusalem and laid siege to it, 
11  and Nebuchadnezzar himself came up to the city while his officers were besieging it. 
12  Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his attendants, his nobles and his officials all surrendered to him. In the eighth year of the reign of the king of Babylon, he took Jehoiachin prisoner. 
13  As the LORD had declared, Nebuchadnezzar removed all the treasures from the temple of the LORD and from the royal palace, and took away all the gold articles that Solomon king of Israel had made for the temple of the LORD. 
14  He carried into exile all Jerusalem: all the officers and fighting men, and all the craftsmen and artisans–a total of ten thousand. Only the poorest people of the land were left. 

On 2 Kings 24:8-19:  These verses describe how in approximately 597 B.C. while Jehoiachin is king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon invades Judah again, this time deporting back to Babylon approximately 10,000 Judahites, including King Jehoiachin, his mother, wives, officials, 7000 soldiers and 1000 craftsmen and artisans. 

辯論復活

馬太福音22: 23_33_辯論復活

23 撒都該人常說沒有復活的事。那天，他們來問耶穌，說： 24 「夫子，摩西說：『人若死了，沒有孩子，他兄弟當娶他的妻，為哥哥生子立後。』 25 從前在我們這裡有弟兄七人，第一個娶了妻，死了，沒有孩子，撇下妻子給兄弟。 26 第二、第三直到第七個，都是如此。 27 末後，婦人也死了。 28 這樣，當復活的時候，她是七個人中哪一個的妻子呢？因為他們都娶過她。」 29 耶穌回答說：「你們錯了，因為不明白聖經，也不曉得神的大能。 30 當復活的時候，人也不娶也不嫁，乃像天上的使者一樣。 31 論到死人復活，神在經上向你們所說的，你們沒有念過嗎？ 32 他說：『我是亞伯拉罕的神、以撒的神、雅各的神。』神不是死人的神，乃是活人的神。」 33 眾人聽見這話，就稀奇他的教訓。

這是一段很有意思的討論，讓我們看見屬天和屬地的人之眼光何等不同。

在猶太人的傳統裡，為了保護各人的地產，有一種條例，就是兄弟之間有義務為死去的兄弟留個後裔，免得因為沒有後裔，以致地產被變賣成為他人的。所以他們有這樣的疑問，若一個女人和弟兄七人都結過婚，將來到了天上，這女人算是誰的妻子？撒都該人不相信復活，所以用這個例子來考耶穌: 假如有復活的話，將來在天上這些人怎麼辦？

耶穌的回答是為了讓他們明白屬天和屬地的人之眼光何等不同。為了讓他們知道，人到了天上之後和地上的情形完全不同。耶穌說，“人復活之後，不娶也不嫁，乃像天上的使者一樣。”耶穌讓他們明白，第一，人的確可以復活。因為“神原不是死人的神，乃是活人的神，因為在祂那裡人都是活的。(路20:38)”其次，在神那裡的活人不再有兩性的分別，因為天上的使者是沒有性別的。

納稅給該撒

馬太福音22: 15_22_納稅給該撒

15 當時，法利賽人出去商議，怎樣就著耶穌的話陷害他， 16 就打發他們的門徒同希律黨的人去見耶穌，說：「夫子，我們知道你是誠實人，並且誠誠實實傳神的道，什麼人你都不徇情面，因為你不看人的外貌。 17 請告訴我們你的意見如何：納稅給愷撒可以不可以？」

18 耶穌看出他們的惡意，就說：「假冒為善的人哪，為什麼試探我？ 19 拿一個上稅的錢給我看。」他們就拿一個銀錢來給他。 20 耶穌說：「這像和這號是誰的？」21 他們說：「是愷撒的。」耶穌說：「這樣，愷撒的物當歸給愷撒，神的物當歸給神。」 22 他們聽見就稀奇，離開他走了。

再一次我們看到耶穌面對難題所表現的智慧。而耶穌回答問題的智慧經常可以給我們很多靈感去面對生活中的一些抉擇。讀《聖經》時，我們若肯花一點時間去思想，就會發現神就是用祂的話在指引我們人生的方向，生活的選擇。但是你若每次讀《聖經》只是為了應付必須的“靈修”要求，很可能會覺得味如嚼臘。

在馬太和馬可的記錄中，他們指出法利賽人和希律黨人想要陷害耶穌；路加卻更進一步指出，他們窺探耶穌，打發奸細裝作好人，為要在祂的話上得把柄，好將祂交在巡撫的政權之下。因為猶太人的公會不能定人死罪，只有羅馬賦予政權、所指派的巡撫才有權致人於死。在他們三人的記載裡，我們不難發現，原本分道揚鑣的政客，竟然合作要致耶穌於死地。在這裡一共有四群人想害耶穌：法利賽人、希律黨人、文士和祭司長。

God Is King Over All + Don’t Just Love with Words but with Action

Today’s passage is 2 Kings 23:21-24:7.  There are so many good lessons we can learn from this passage.  Let’s go!

2 Kings 23:21-23 (NIV) 
21  The king gave this order to all the people: “Celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.” 
22  Not since the days of the judges who led Israel, nor throughout the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, had any such Passover been observed. 
23  But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the LORD in Jerusalem.
 
On verses 21-23:  In the Book of the Law, God had commanded His people to celebrate the Passover, an annual festival intended to commemorate how God had rescued His people.  As part of ushering a revival (a spiritual awakening) in his land, Josiah leads the people of Judah in celebrating the Passover for the first time in approximately 500 years.
 
What can we learn from this? When revival takes place in a person, group, or community, there is a renewed passion in the people to observe the ceremonies that God has instituted, also known as “ordinances”.  In the Christian church there are two ordinances that Jesus commanded us to observe: baptism and communion.
