Hi GAMErs,
Today’s passage is Exodus 2:1-10. Let’s go!
Exodus 2:1-10 (NIV)
1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.
3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it.
6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.
7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”
8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.
9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.
10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”
On verses 1-10: Exodus 2:1-10 is a beautiful picture of God’s protection. Remember what the Nile River represented starting in Exodus 1:22. Intent on destroying the Israelites, Pharaoh ordered his people to throw every Hebrew boy into the Nile (see Exodus 1:22). So for the Israelites, the Nile River represented death.
Ironically, when Moses was a few months old, his mother hid him in a basket among the reeds of the Nile. But unlike other boys, when Moses went into the Nile River, he didn’t die. He came out alive!
That a daughter of Pharaoh would find Moses, feel compassion for him, adopt him into her family and protect him from otherwise certain death speaks to God’s sovereign plan and protection for Moses.
You might even say that Moses’ Nile River experience was like a baptism. Moses went into the Nile River destined to die like any other Hebrew boy, but he came out of the Nile with a new life, a new name, a new identity, a new royal family, a new destiny and a new protection on his life.
In a similar way, all of us were destined to drown in the river of our sin. But someone from God’s royal family – Jesus Christ the Son of God – heard our cry and had compassion on us. Jesus entered that river, drew us out, and protected us from certain destruction. Just as Moses was saved by the princess of Egypt, so we were saved by Jesus the Prince of Heaven.
Through Jesus Christ, God drew us out of the river of our sin, he adopted us into his royal family, he gave us a new name and identity, he raised us up for a new destiny, and he placed new protection on our lives saying “never again will this child’s life be at risk”.
Isn’t God good? Because of Jesus, there is a protection on your life that is not man-made. God is protecting you. Through Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave, God is protecting you from the ultimate consequences of sin (eternal separation from God). Even more He is protecting you FOR a relationship with Him and a destiny to live for His glory. You are fully protected by God!
Heavenly Father, thank You that because of Jesus I am fully protected by You. I have been drawn out by You, called by You, and adopted by You as Your own. Thank You for saving me and continuing to watch over me to this day. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
