Today’s passage is Luke 24:13-29. Let’s go!
Luke 24:13-16 (NIV)
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
16 but they were kept from recognizing him.
On verses 13-16: How many times have we been in conversations with others, failing to recognize that Jesus is present, listening and watching? Remember what Jesus says, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.” (Matthew 18:20) Whenever we’re having conversations with one another, may we speak and act knowing that Jesus is in our midst.
Luke 24:17-24 (NIV)
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast.
18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”
On verses 17-24: Notice verse 21: “but we had hoped that he was the one”. Notice the past perfect tense here. They had hoped, but with Jesus’ death their hope was seemingly gone. Little did they know that their hope was staring them in the face even as they were speaking. As a disciple of Jesus, be careful not to speak as if you have no hope, when the One who is hope is right there with you.
Also, keep in mind that Jesus had told his disciples repeatedly that he would be killed and on the third day be raised to life (Luke 9:22; 18:33). Yet, as Jesus will point out in the next verse, the disciples were slow of heart to believe.
Luke 24:25-27 (NIV)
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
On verses 25-27: Here Jesus shows these two disciples that his suffering, death and resurrection were all spoken of in the Old Testament (“Moses and all the Prophets”). Whenever you read the Old Testament, remember that the Old Testament is pointing us to Jesus – his life, his death and his resurrection.
Also, notice the phrase Jesus uses in verse 25 to describe the disciples: “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe”. This tells me that faith in the end is a matter of the heart. If your heart is hard, you will be slow to believe even when the evidence is staring right at you. So every day let’s approach God with a soft heart.
Luke 24:28-29 (NIV)
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther.
29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
On verses 28-29: When the two disciples urged Jesus to stay, he stayed. What can we learn from this? Jesus is happy to stay wherever he is invited and welcome. In fact, as verse 28 suggests, Jesus waits for our invitation. He will not insist on staying if we don’t want him there.
Lord Jesus, I pray that I would not be slow of heart to believe what You say. Please come and stay with me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. May I be more aware of Your presence in my life when I am talking with others. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
