Mark 9:24-32    Click here for Bible Verses

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Mark 9:24-32.  Let’s go!

Mark 9:24 (NIV)
24  Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

On verse 24:  After realizing that the size of his own faith mattered, the boy’s father declares his faith in Jesus and asks Jesus to help him overcome his unbelief.  That is a legitimate prayer and request you can make to God: “help me overcome my unbelief”.  When you pray that way, you’re coming to God honestly, humbly and with an open mind.  God loves to give grace to those who come before Him with honesty, humility and an open mind.

Mark 9:25a (NIV)
25  When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit…

On verse 25a:  Once again we see that Jesus didn’t do miracles for show.  He does miracles out of compassion.  The fact that a crowd was soon approaching seemed to even make Jesus rush the process a little faster.

Mark 9:25b-29 (NIV)
25 …”You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
26  The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.”
27  But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
28  After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
29  He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”

On verses 25b-29:  There are some spiritual battles and demonic forces you fight where commanding an evil spirit to leave in the name of Jesus is enough.  But sometimes there will be spiritual battles where you need to pray more if you want to see the victory.  That’s what Jesus means when he says, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”  With prayer comes power.  As we like to say at Thrive: much prayer, much power; little prayer, little power; no prayer, no power.

Mark 9:30-32 (NIV)
30  They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were,
31  because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.”
32  But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

On verses 30-32:  Not everything that Jesus taught was for everybody to hear.  Here Jesus had some things to teach the disciples that he did not want others to know (v30-31), at least not yet.  As part of this, Mark includes Jesus’ second prediction of his own betrayal, death and resurrection.

Jesus, because with prayer comes power, I pray that I would be a person of prayer, that I would experience more of Your power and victory in my life.  In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
