When Making Tough Decisions

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Acts 1:12-26.  Let’s go!

Acts 1:12-14 (NIV)
12  Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city.
13  When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
14  They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

On verses 12-14:  After spending time with Jesus post-resurrection and witnessing His ascension into heaven, the disciples, including Jesus’ female followers, Jesus’ mother Mary and Jesus’ brothers, would return to the place where they were staying and join together constantly in prayer.  It was their closest, most natural and most direct way of keeping in contact with their Lord Jesus.  They would pray together, knowing that Jesus heard them.  It was all coming together for them that Jesus truly is all-seeing, all-knowing, all-powerful God.  What can we learn from this?

1.     According to Mark 6:3, while Jesus lived on this earth Jesus had four brothers called James, Joseph, Judas and Simon.  They were his half-brothers in that they were the natural sons of Jesus’ parents Joseph and Mary.  These brothers did not believe that Jesus was who he claimed to be: the Son of God.  That is, until the resurrection.  Jesus’ resurrection was that pivotal moment when his half-brothers who doubted Him started to believe in Him.  James would even become the leader of the church in Jerusalem.   Again, if you want to know if Christianity is valid and worth believing in, start with the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus.

God’s Power and Purposes for Your Life

Hi GAMErs!

Today we begin the book of Acts.  Written by Luke in approximately 60 A.D. as a sequel to the Gospel of Luke, Acts is such an important book in that: (1) it gives us a detailed account of what happened to Jesus’ followers after Jesus ascended to heaven; (2) it gives us a historical backdrop for understanding the letters of Paul, which would make up much of the New Testament; (3) it shows us what the early church looked like and the incredible faith, courage and perseverance they displayed in the face of great uncertainty and persecution; and (4) it takes us on a tour from Jerusalem to the various nations where the church spread.  Even more, the book of Acts is filled with powerful lessons for us today.

Today’s passage is Acts 1:1-11.  Let’s go!

Acts 1:1 (NIV)
1  In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach

On verse 1:  The “former book” Luke is referring to is the Gospel of Luke, which Luke also wrote to Theophilus.  Little is known about Theophilus.  The fact that Luke refers to Theophilus as “most excellent Theophilus” (Luke 1:3) suggests to many scholars that Theophilus may have been a person of wealth and high social status.  The name “Theophilus” literally means “lover of God”, which has led some to believe that “Theophilus” may also have been a code name for addressing Christians or people interested in Jesus generally.

Acts 1:2-4a (NIV)
2  until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
3  After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
4  On one occasion, while he was eating with them…

Depending on the Presence of God

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 40:17-38, the final passage of Exodus.  Let’s go!

Exodus 40:17-35 (NIV)
17  So the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month in the second year.
18  When Moses set up the tabernacle, he put the bases in place, erected the frames, inserted the crossbars and set up the posts.
19  Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering over the tent, as the LORD commanded him.
20  He took the Testimony and placed it in the ark, attached the poles to the ark and put the atonement cover over it…….

On verses 17-35:  Notice how over and over the words “as the LORD commanded Moses” get repeated when describing how Moses set up the tabernacle.  When Moses had finished the work, a cloud representing the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.  For me it’s a powerful reminder of two things:

First, full obedience ushers in the presence of God.  Moses carefully set up the tabernacle just as the LORD had commanded, and in a similar way Jesus carefully obeyed His Father completely and it is through His perfect obedience that we now have God’s presence in our lives.  Jesus’ perfect obedience ushered the presence of God into our world.

It’s All About Jesus

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 40:1-16.  Let’s go!

Exodus 40:1-9 (NIV)
1  Then the LORD said to Moses:
2  “Set up the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the first month.
3  Place the ark of the Testimony in it and shield the ark with the curtain.
4  Bring in the table and set out what belongs on it. Then bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps.
5  Place the gold altar of incense in front of the ark of the Testimony and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.
6  “Place the altar of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting;
7  place the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it.
8  Set up the courtyard around it and put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.
9  “Take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy.
10  Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate the altar, and it will be most holy.
11  Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them.

On verses 1-11:  This past Sunday at THRIVE Church Online we looked at this passage together.  In a message called “He’s There For You: Finding Jesus in Exodus”, I tried to show you that the seven “I am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John are reflected in Exodus 40:4-9 in the exact order that they appear in the Gospel of John.

You’re Perfectly Blessed Because Jesus Perfectly Obeyed

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 39:22-43.  Let’s go!

Exodus 39:22-31 (NIV)
22  They made the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth–the work of a weaver–
23  with an opening in the center of the robe like the opening of a collar, and a band around this opening, so that it would not tear.
24  They made pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen around the hem of the robe.
25  And they made bells of pure gold and attached them around the hem between the pomegranates.
26  The bells and pomegranates alternated around the hem of the robe to be worn for ministering, as the LORD commanded Moses.
27  For Aaron and his sons, they made tunics of fine linen–the work of a weaver–
28  and the turban of fine linen, the linen headbands and the undergarments of finely twisted linen.
29  The sash was of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn–the work of an embroiderer–as the LORD commanded Moses.
30  They made the plate, the sacred diadem, out of pure gold and engraved on it, like an inscription on a seal: HOLY TO THE LORD.
31  Then they fastened a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban, as the LORD commanded Moses.

On verses 22-31:  As we saw with so many of the priestly clothes described in verses 1-21, notice that Aaron’s robe, tunic, and turban were made of fine material, done by a craftsman, and adorned with gold.  It all speaks of how highly God valued the office of the priest.  Since as believers in Jesus Christ, we too are priests in God’s kingdom, let it be a reminder not to take our role as priests lightly or for granted.  May we approach our calling as priests with reverence and respect, and give God service that is of high quality and high value too.

Bling Bling for the King

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 39:1-21.  Let’s go!

Exodus 39:1-21 (NIV)
1  From the blue, purple and scarlet yarn they made woven garments for ministering in the sanctuary. They also made sacred garments for Aaron, as the LORD commanded Moses.
2  They made the ephod of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen.
3  They hammered out thin sheets of gold and cut strands to be worked into the blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen–the work of a skilled craftsman.
4  They made shoulder pieces for the ephod, which were attached to two of its corners, so it could be fastened.
5  Its skillfully woven waistband was like it–of one piece with the ephod and made with gold, and with blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and with finely twisted linen, as the LORD commanded Moses……

On verses 1-21:  After describing the building of the tabernacle and all its furniture (Exodus 36-38), Moses goes on to describe in Exodus 39 the making of the clothes for Aaron the high priest and his sons who will all serve as priests.  Exodus 39 is basically the fulfillment of Exodus 28, when the LORD first tells Moses the kind of clothes that the high priest and priests should wear.

Here’s what I notice: notice how blingy the high priest’s clothes are.  Whether it’s the ephod (v2), the waistband (v5), the onyx stones in gold filigree settings (v6), or the breastpiece (v15-21), all of it is decorated with gold.  You only put gold on someone you think is worthy of it.  The fact that God put so much gold on His high priest and saw to it that his clothes were decorated in gold speaks of how valuable the priest was to God.  Likewise, as believers in Jesus Christ, we are priests in God’s kingdom (1 Peter 2:9) and you are precious to God.  God has covered us in something even more precious and, from heaven’s perspective, even blingier than gold; it’s the blood of Jesus.

Lay Down Your Mirror

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 38:1-31.  Let’s go!

Exodus 38:1-7 (NIV)
1  They built the altar of burnt offering of acacia wood, three cubits high; it was square, five cubits long and five cubits wide.
2  They made a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar were of one piece, and they overlaid the altar with bronze.
3  They made all its utensils of bronze–its pots, shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks and firepans.
4  They made a grating for the altar, a bronze network, to be under its ledge, halfway up the altar.
5  They cast bronze rings to hold the poles for the four corners of the bronze grating.
6  They made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze.
7  They inserted the poles into the rings so they would be on the sides of the altar for carrying it. They made it hollow, out of boards.

On verses 1-7:  The altar of burnt offering, which was used to sacrifice animals, was made of bronze, as were the utensils (v3), the grating (v4), the poles for carrying the altar (v6) as well as the rings that the poles went through (v5).  Why bronze?  A pretty good argument can be made that in the Law of Moses (contained the first five books of the Bible) bronze symbolizes God’s judgment.  See for example Deuteronomy 28:23 where God says that if the Israelites do not obey the LORD, the Israelites will be under God’s curse and as part of that “The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron.”  Similarly, in Leviticus 26:18-19, the LORD’s message to the Israelites is that if they do not listen to Him, He will punish them and, as part of this, the LORD says, “If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over.  I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.”

The Furniture That Looks Like You

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 37:1-29.  When you begin to understand God’s calling on your life, you’ll find that you actually resemble the furniture that Bezalel and his team made for the tabernacle.  How so?  Let’s find out.

Exodus 37:1-9 (NIV)
1  Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood–two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high.
2  He overlaid it with pure gold, both inside and out, and made a gold molding around it.
3  He cast four gold rings for it and fastened them to its four feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other.
4  Then he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.
5  And he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it.
6  He made the atonement cover of pure gold–two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide.
7  Then he made two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover.
8  He made one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; at the two ends he made them of one piece with the cover.
9  The cherubim had their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim faced each other, looking toward the cover.

On verses 1-9:  Here Bezalel makes the ark.  Notice the parallels between the ark and our lives today:
–        Like the ark which was wooden but covered in gold, we’re wooden, fragile and breakable, but we are covered in something extremely precious, in fact more precious than gold; we’re covered with the blood of Jesus.

Figuring Out Your Purpose and Appreciating Your Value

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 36:8-38.  Let’s go!

Exodus 36:8-38 (NIV)
8  All the skilled men among the workmen made the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim worked into them by a skilled craftsman.
9  All the curtains were the same size–twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide.
10  They joined five of the curtains together and did the same with the other five.
11  Then they made loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and the same was done with the end curtain in the other set.
12  They also made fifty loops on one curtain and fifty loops on the end curtain of the other set, with the loops opposite each other……

On verses 8-38:  When I read these verses I’m once again struck by how intricate, intentional and detailed was the work that went into the tabernacle.  God’s original designs for the tabernacle were full of intricate details, and He entrusted those designs into the “expert hands” (v8) of Bezalel, Oholiab and the skilled craftspeople they worked with (v1, 8).

Just as the tabernacle was made up of different parts, each with its own purpose and function, so the church today is made of different parts, each with its own purpose and function.  As 1 Corinthians 12 teaches us:

1 Corinthians 12:12 (NIV)
12  The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.

What A Person Needs to Succeed

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Exodus 36:1-7.  Let’s go!

Exodus 36:1-3a (NIV)
1  So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the LORD has commanded.”
2  Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work.
3  They received from Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary…

On verses 1-3a:  Bezalel, Oholiab and their team had all they needed to flourish in their ministry of designing the artwork for the tabernacle.  They had clear instructions and commands from the LORD (v1).  They had the encouragement and support of their leaders (v2 – “Moses summoned” Bezalel, Oholiab and every willing skilled person).  They had the financial resources to do the work from the offerings that the Israelites had brought (v3) and which Moses fully entrusted to them.

What’s the lesson here?  For any person to succeed in an important project (or in their career, business or work), what they need are: (1) a clear mandate and a sense of God’s call; (2) the encouragement and support of their leaders; and (3) the financial resources necessary to get the work done.  You need all three.
