The Answer to Your Deepest Longing

Today’s passage is John 4:1-14.  Let’s go!

John 4:1-3 (NIV) 
1  The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John,
2  although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
3  When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

On verses 1-3:  Notice that Jesus was intentional and careful in his movements.

John 4:4-6 (NIV)
4  Now he had to go through Samaria.
5  So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
6  Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

On verses 4-6:  On his way from Judea to Galilee, Jesus goes through Samaria.  The people living in Samaria, called Samaritans, were a people of mixed Jewish and Gentile blood.  The fact that Jesus was tired from the journey speaks to his humanity.  Interestingly, it was Jesus’ humanity that led him to this divine encounter in the verses that follow.

〈申命记〉 6:5 你要尽心、尽性、尽力爱耶和华你的神。

假如你搬新家,或是新租了一个住处,家俱和必需品之外,你一定得放什么东西在新住处呢?对于比较敬虔的犹太人,在搬到新家的卅天之内,一定得在家里的每一个门上摆设一个Mezuzah,一个放经文的漂亮盒子。当然,洗手间的门和厨柜的门就不用放了。这个盒子里装有依照犹太人的诫律做成的羊皮卷,上面写着两处经文〈申命记〉六章4-9节:「以色列啊,你要听!耶和华我们神是独一的主。你要尽心、尽性、尽力爱耶和华你的神。我今日所吩咐你的话都要记在心上,也要殷勤教训你的儿女。无论你坐在家里、行在路上,躺下、起来,都要谈论。也要系在手上为记号,戴在额上为经文。又要写在你房屋的门框上,并你的城门上。」

第二处经文在〈申命记〉11章13-21节:「你们若留意听从我今日所吩咐的诫命,爱耶和华你们的神,尽心、尽性侍奉祂,祂必按时降秋雨春雨在你们的地上,使你们可以收藏五谷、新酒和油,也必使你吃得饱足,并使田野为你的牲畜长草。你们要谨慎,免得心中受迷惑,就偏离正路,去侍奉敬拜别神。耶和华的怒气向你们发作,就使天闭塞不下雨,地也不出产,使你们在耶和华所赐给你们的美地上速速灭亡。」

以色列人按著摩西所说的,在他们各人的家里都摆放了神的话语,听说这个放经文的盒子价值不菲。因为按著犹太人的诫律作成的羊皮卷已经很耗时,又要请人在羊皮上抄写经文,那不是一般的手艺。至于放经文的盒子,因为要彰显神的荣耀,所以都做得十分精美,当然就不便宜了。这个盒子要放在门的右边,靠近右肩之处,他们每天进出时都要触摸一下,表示记得神的话。大约从十六世纪开始,有人认为不止要触摸,还要亲吻盒子,以表示对神话语的爱慕。这个经文盒子对以色列人而言,不止有洁净住处的作用,并且相信它会带来神的祝福和保护,有的人把它看成护身符。

Let Jesus Get the Glory

Today’s passage is John 3:22-36.  Let’s go!

John 3:22-30 (NIV) 
22  After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. 
23  Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized. 
24  (This was before John was put in prison.) 
25  An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. 
26  They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan–the one you testified about–well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.” 
27  To this John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.
29  The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 
30  He must become greater; I must become less.

On verses 22-30:  I absolutely love and admire the humility of John the Baptist.  Instead of envying Jesus because Jesus was baptizing more people than he was and becoming more popular than he was (v26), John the Baptist displays incredible humility.  First, John says, “A man can only receive what has been given to him from heaven.” (v27)  In other words, instead of worrying about he didn’t have, John the Baptist simply focused on what he did have because of God’s grace and was thankful for it.  Likewise, may you not worry and fret about what you don’t have but be thankful for what you do have.

〈申命记〉 5: 32 所以,你们要照耶和华你们神所吩咐的谨守遵行,不可偏离左右。

有人把对母亲的看法做了简单的注解:「3 岁时: 妈咪,我爱妳。10 岁时: 妈,随便啦。16 岁时: 我妈真的很烦。18 岁时: 想要离开这个家。25 岁时: 妈,妳当时是对的。30 岁时: 我想要去我妈家。50 岁时: 我不想要失去我妈。70 岁时: 只要我妈还能在这,我愿意为了我妈放弃一切。」这些过程我都看过了,也经历了,真是百感交集。难怪古人说,养儿方知父母恩。没有做过父母,不知道父母的心肠。从思念父母的教导到回想神给以色列人十诫的心情,真有点类似。

神实在是尽其所能地将自己显现给以色列人,祂让整座何烈山(西乃山)都着火了。一个非常奇特的景象,摩西看到的只是未被烧毁的荆棘,以色列人看到的是更大更壮观的奇景。以色列人站在山下,山上有火焰冲天,并有昏黑、密云、幽暗。神从火焰中对他们说话,他们只听见声音,却没有看见形象(申5:11-12)。我有时候感到人很矛盾。好像民间信仰,被鬼上身的人又跳又自伐,人就信他的话;但是耶和华神显这样大的神蹟,以色列人为何看完就忘了?他们见烈火焚山而惧怕,一转眼却会被引诱而去拜偶像。那些信民间信仰的人,你要叫他来信耶稣,并不容易,他们忠于所拜的鬼和偶像。信耶稣的人,却有时会被引诱去算命或做一些不该做的事。

摩西说:「看哪,耶和华─我们 神将祂的荣光和他的大能显给我们看,我们又听见祂的声音从火中出来。今日我们得见 神与人说话,人还存活。现在这大火将要烧灭我们,我们何必冒死呢?若再听见耶和华─我们神的声音就必死亡。凡属血气的,曾有何人听见永生 神的声音从火中出来,像我们听见还能存活呢?」(申5:24-26)

在这世界上,有哪一国的神,会如此特别向祂所有的百姓显现呢?那时,火焰烧山,他们听见从黑暗中出来的声音,就因而学会敬畏神了。

From Death to Life

Today’s passage is John 3:9-21.  Let’s go!

John 3:9-13 (NIV) 
9  “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
10  “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things?
11  I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.
12  I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?
13  No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven–the Son of Man.

On verses 9-13:  Nicodemus was known as “the teacher of Israel” (v10 ESV, NKJV).  Yet here Israel’s teacher is unable to understand what Jesus, the Son of Man, was saying.  It shows that Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man, had wisdom and experience that Israel’s greatest teachers could not match.  Teachers like Nicodemus were mere men reaching for heaven, whereas Jesus is the one who “came from heaven” to reach for men on earth.

除祂以外再无别神

〈申命记〉 4:39   所以,今日你要知道,也要记在心上,天上地下惟有耶和华祂是 神,除祂以外,再无别神。

这句经文是基督教的重心,也是犹太教的中心。世界上有很多人造出来的假神和邪灵,只有耶和华才是创造宇宙万物,赐人生命的神。

在摩西给以色列人的训言里,他强调的就是神和以色列人的关系。神和人的关系,这就是《圣经》的主题。这世界上有一位真正的神,祂要和我们建立关系,免得我们被邪灵所骗,拜错对象。神跟人的关系,就像神和以色列人的关系一样,神先来找我们。所以在以色列人被奴役,毫无前途的光景下,神借着摩西向他们显现,带领他们出埃及。但这不是毫无先兆的,神早就向亚伯拉罕预言,神拣选亚伯拉罕和他的后裔做神的子民;以色列人的一举一动都在神的计划之中。

曾经作过算命仙的叶明翰牧师说过一个被邪灵拣选的真人真事:陈宝桂女士在四十岁时婚姻失败,又没有儿女。在心情非常沮丧的情况下,有一天走过台北兰州街,无意间看见了一家神坛,她就走进去要问神明,希望从神明得到一些指点。不料,当她在问神明的时候,神坛的主持人对她说:「神明要用你。」结果,邪灵就附在她身上,使她失去意志,开始不停的颤抖。从那时起,她就成为这家神坛的乩童。二十多年来,她一口的牙齿就是在降童(邪灵附身)时,抖得格格作响,一颗颗的抖光了。

廿多年里,这家神坛因她赚了许多钱,就到台北县一个矿区附近买地,盖了一座非常大的庙,她也搬到庙里去住。后来,附着她的邪灵也许太眷恋她,开始不按规矩来附身,有请没请想来就来,有时半夜来,有时吃饭时来,上街走路也来,甚至在洗澡时也不放过她,它一来陈宝桂就开始颤抖,有时又跳又叫,使陈宝桂无法过正常人的生活,更糟的是因为她不定时的吵闹,使庙里不得清静,人人都以为她疯了,三次送她到精神病院,但检查结果却完全正常,又把她送回来。

What Does It Mean To Be “Born Again”?

Today’s passage is John 3:1-8.  Let’s go!

John 3:1-2 (NIV) 
1  Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 
2  He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

On verses 1-2:   Jesus’ most vocal opponents and critics were the Pharisees, the religious elite of Israel.  Yet even among the Pharisees, there were those who secretly believed that Jesus was a teacher sent from God.  One of them was Nicodemus, who was not only a Pharisee but also a member of the powerful ruling council of Israel (v1b).  Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night (v2), perhaps because he did not want to be seen as associating with Jesus.

  从两件事,你可以看见一个人的量度多少:当你结婚的时候,多少人参加你的婚礼,可以看见你的份量;当你死的时候,多少人送你到坟墓,可以看见你的量度。我以后死的时候,多少人到我的坟墓来埋葬我,我现在不知道,但是我结婚的时候,一个只能容纳六百人的礼拜堂,来了一千二百人。为什么?因为太多人曾经听过我讲道,他们从传道人的身上领受上帝的恩典、感动,传到他们的生命,他们相当纪念、非常喜欢我,所以当我结婚的时候,他们都来了。

  我没有请他们吃饭,因为我没有那么多钱,但我送每位来宾一包巧克力,我要送放很久也不会坏的东西,作为结婚的回礼,每位来的宾客,我们也送一本圣经给他们,圣经内页有我和我太太的签字,所以他们带着一包巧克力、一本圣经回家,可以吃地上的东西,也可以享受上帝的话语。一千多本圣经,在一天之内分完了。以后,我死了,我就不知道来的人有多少,特别如果是在新冠疫情的时代死去,很少人会到坟墓。

  青年人在教会结婚的时候,有一种青年人结婚时,一定很多人来,就是那些参加诗班的青年人,他们常常为主献诗,常常在台上服事上帝,所以很多朋友来看他们。我们的诗班有一、两百人,有一个人结婚,很多人就来参加。分享自己与人的生命,当有需要的时候,就有很多人供应他们的生命给你,这是人际交往的公义原则。从来不服事别人的人结婚,没有人理睬。这是生命的原则。

  我今天要从另一个方面来看谁的生命是丰盛的生命,成为我们今天重要的信息:

一、 一个人生命丰不丰盛,看他做人在困难中怎样奋斗:

  在困难中站得住的人,他的生命是丰盛的;在困难中倒下去的人,他的生命不是丰盛的。现在,我要推倒他(编按:唐牧师所指的,是站在旁边的翻译员),那么,他站得好好的,我能够把他推倒的话,就表示我的生命比他更有力量。现在,我要推倒你,你要怎么预备?你要站马步,两脚要开一点。两脚太近,很容易跌倒,两脚分开,不容易跌倒。你看那些争战的人,中国人说:站马步,你两脚分开来,你的两个腿就变成你上面的根基了,根基稳固的人,不容易跌倒。

将心比心

〈申命记〉 24:22 你也要记念你在埃及地做过奴仆,所以我吩咐你这样行。

在〈申命记〉 24:10-22里,神特别提到对穷人的看顾和帮助。神对穷人的眷顾,为何不赐给他们钱财或好运,让他们都能脱离窘境,反而是希望别人在他们有需要时去帮助他们呢?神不是没有能力,为何不让世界变成一个均富的世界呢?假如这个世界里,大家拥有的都一样多,那么会不会减少很多问题?

回想神起初造伊甸园时,祂的用意是想让人都能享受祂的创造,但是一旦罪进入世界,人的贪念和罪性就颠覆了神原先的理想。神没有立刻挪去人的贪念和罪性,但是祂却让人在这个充满贪念和私欲的世界里学习,让人看到自己的罪性、神的完美,让人明白自己的软弱,若不倚靠神,人终会自己灭了自己。

我想,神要我们明白,人若不彼此帮助,就没有希望。所以祂允许贫穷的存在。贫穷代表了人的软弱,人的有限;某些人的贫穷反映出某些人的贪婪和榨取。所以要使人回正常心,就必须让人学习付出,从别人的需要上去看到自己的责任;并且要使人懂得怎样活出神的形像。当我们来到神面前时,祂总是怜悯帮助;因此当有人需要我们的帮助时,我们也必须用神的爱去爱他们。

在上一章里,神说若是取人当头,不可拿人家的上下磨石,因为那是他们维生的工具。若是没了磨石,他们连吃饭的工具都没有了,从何有力气去赚钱来还你呢?因此怜悯别人,就是帮助自己。你想拿回人家借去的钱,那么你就帮助他们有赚钱谋生的机会,他们有钱不就可以还你了吗?

Jesus: Like No Other

Today’s passage is John 2:13-25.  Let’s go!

John 2:13-17 (NIV) 
13  When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 
14  In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 
15  So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 
16  To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!” 
17  His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

On verses 13-17:  Here we read of Jesus going to Jerusalem, visiting the temple courts and driving out those who had turned the temple courts into a marketplace.
