If you care for your orchard (the fig tree), you’ll enjoy its fruit; if you honor your boss, you’ll be honored. 《The Message》

When One Chapter of Your Life Closes

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Romans 15:22-33.  Let’s go!

Romans 15:22-24 (NIV)
22  This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.
23  But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to see you,
24  I plan to do so when I go to Spain. I hope to visit you while passing through and to have you assist me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while.

On verses 22-24:  Paul had spent many years trying to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to places in the Eastern Mediterranean where people had not yet heard.  That was his mission.  Now Paul was finding that “there is no more place for me to work in these regions” (v23), since those regions now had reasonable access to the gospel.  Having accomplished basically all that he wanted to accomplish in those regions, Paul looked forward to finally visiting the church in Rome, something he had longed to do for a while.  He was finally making plans to visit Rome on his way to Spain.

Focus on the Grace God Has Given You

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Romans 15:14-21.  Let’s go!

Romans 15:14-21 (NIV)
14  I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another.
15  I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me
16  to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
17  Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.
18  I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done–
19  by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.
20  It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.
21  Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”

On verses 14-21:  A running theme in the book of Romans is: focus on the grace God has given you.

A prudent person sees trouble coming and ducks; a simpleton walks in blindly and is clobbered. 《The Message》

Just as lotions and fragrance give sensual delight, a sweet friendship refreshes the soul. 《The Message》

When You Get Tired of Serving Others

Hi GAMErs!

There are so many lessons we can learn from today’s passage, Romans 15:1-13.  Let’s go!

Romans 15:1-3 (NIV)
1  We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.
2  Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
3  For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”

On verses 1-3:  One of the big lessons of Romans is that we don’t live to please ourselves, but we live to serve others.  That’s the whole point of Romans 14 and now in Romans 15:1-2 says it even more directly.  And why do we live not just to please ourselves but to serve others?  Because that’s how Jesus lived (v3).

Getting Along with Those You Disagree With

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Romans 14:13-23.  Let’s go!

Romans 14:13-22a (NIV)
13  Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.
14  As one who is in the Lord Jesus, I am fully convinced that no food is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean.
15  If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Christ died.
16  Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil.
17  For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
18  because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.

On verses 13-22a:  We’ve been learning in Romans 14 that there are certain truths in the Bible that are indisputable and that form the foundation of our faith as Christians.  There are other matters where the Bible is not as clear and where Christians are free to have their own opinions and preferences.  These are what Paul calls “disputable matters”.

How to Deal with Controversial Matters that the Bible Isn’t Clear On

Hi GAMErs!

Today’s passage is Romans 14:1-12.  Let’s go!

Romans 14:1-12 (NIV)
1  Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.
2  One man’s faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.
3  The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him.

On verses 1-12:  In the Christian faith, there are certain core truths that are indisputable – big things such as the truth that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that He rose from the dead, that He is fully man and fully God, and that our salvation is not something we can earn by our own good works but is 100% a gift we receive from God when we place our faith in His Son Jesus.
