Circumcised by Jesus

Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is Joshua 5:1-8.  Let’s go!

Joshua 5:1 (NIV)
1  Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until we had crossed over, their hearts melted and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

On verse 1:  Upon hearing about the past miracles God had performed for the Israelites, Israel’s enemies were very much intimidated.  Nevertheless, as we will see in the verses that follow, God would lead the Israelites through an important process internally before they would be ready to enter and conquer the promised land.

What can we learn from this?  God has a promised land for you to conquer.  That promised land is the dream God has placed in your heart, the destiny God made you for, the calling on your life.  But before you can take over your promised land successfully, God has an internal, private preparation process that He wants you to go through, one which people who know you from a distance will not be aware of.  Promotion in public is preceded by preparation in private.

Yom Kippur

God Is Never Too Early and Never Too Late

Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is Joshua 4:11-24.  We’ll include verse 10 in here too.  Let’s go!

Joshua 4:10-18 (NIV)
10  Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the LORD had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over,
11  and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the LORD and the priests came to the other side while the people watched.
12  The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, armed, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them…….

On verses 10-18:  If I was one of the priests carrying the ark, and I had to remain standing in the middle of the Jordan River while everyone else is passing through, I would probably be more than a little nervous, thinking, “Can we go over already?  What if the river collapses on us and washes us away?”  But the priests stayed until all 40,000 Israelites crossed over the Jordan River (v13).  It wasn’t until all the soldiers crossed over that God gave the command for the priests to come out of the Jordan (v13-17), and the moment the priests stepped foot on the other side of the Jordan River the river waters returned to flood stage as before (v18).

Remember and Celebrate What God Has Done

Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is Joshua 4:1-10.  Let’s go!

Joshua 4:1-9 (NIV)
1  When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua,
2  “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,
3  and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan from right where the priests stood and to carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.”
4  So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,
5  and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, …….

On verses 1-9:  Why did Joshua tell the twelve representatives from the twelve tribes of Israel to take a stone from the middle of the Jordan River where the priests were standing.  It’s because these stones were “to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever” (v7).  In other words, these large stones, which they would carry on their shoulders (v5) from the bottom of the Jordan River, would serve as a long-lasting reminder that God had cut off the flow of the Jordan and that the people crossed the Jordan on dry land.

The Walk of Faith

Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is Joshua 3:9-17.  Let’s go!

Joshua 3:9-14 (NIV)
9  Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.
10  This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.
11  See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you.
12  Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
13  And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD–the Lord of all the earth–set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.”
14  So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.

On verses 9-14:  The priests carrying the ark of the covenant go ahead of the people to lead the way through the Jordan River.  What can we learn from this?  A good leader will not tell his or her people to do what he himself is unwilling to do.  The best leaders lead not just with their words but also with their example.

When You’re Not Sure Which Way to Go

Hi GAMErs,

Today’s passage is Joshua 3:1-8.  Let’s go!

Joshua 3:1-4a (NIV)
1  Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.
2  After three days the officers went throughout the camp,
3  giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it.
4  Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.

On verses 1-4a:  Here Joshua and the Israelites are preparing to cross the Jordan River on their way to Canaan, also known as the promised land.  Joshua orders his officers, who in turn order the people to move out and follow two things: (1) the ark of the covenant, which was an ornate, gold-plated box that symbolized the presence of God; and (2) and the priests carrying that ark.  That way they knew which way to go (v4).
