Grace for Each New Day

Today’s passage is Exodus 16:19-36.  Let’s go!

Exodus 16:19-21 (NIV)
19  Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”
20  However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.
21  Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away.

On verses 19-21:  What can we learn from this?  This is not to say that we shouldn’t plan ahead or keep leftovers in the fridge.  But the lesson here is that God’s grace is enough for each day.  Instead of worrying that we won’t have enough tomorrow, trust God that He will have new grace to give us for each new day.  His grace is always sufficient for us.

Also, when we ignore God’s commands for living and working, our lives begin to decay and smell.

Exodus 16:22-26 (NIV)
22  On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much–two omers for each person–and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.
23  He said to them, “This is what the LORD commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.'”
24  So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it.

在上帝主权统管下的意志

  圣经说:「我要使法老的心刚硬」,我们怎么理解?上帝的主权超越人的意志,人心能否顺从都在神主权的统管下。圣经说:「耶和华说:『我要显我一切的恩慈,在你面前经过,宣告我的名。我要恩待谁就恩待谁;要怜悯谁就怜悯谁。』」(出 33:19)一个人的生命要败坏下去,不是他决定就可以,也要上帝的许可。

有关上帝的主权与旨意,我分成四大阶层:一、上帝计划中的旨意,二、上帝许可中的自由,三、上帝引导人的转变,四、上帝任凭人的灭亡,这四样都在神的主权之下。你说:「我自己决定,所以我有这样的地步」,你没有想到你所打的主意有上帝的主权在你身上的彰显,如果你能好,是因为上帝施恩给你,如果你不好,是上帝任凭你硬着你的心,因着上帝的主权与施恩决定一个人能领受多少恩典,如果上帝没有施恩,我们只能抵挡上帝,刚硬着心。圣经说:「我要使法老的心刚硬」,这不是指硬心是上帝的决定,而是说这其中有上帝的许可,甚至是上帝的任凭。人自己本意的败坏是上帝的任凭,不让你悔改,继续硬心下去。人以为他的抵挡连上帝都束手无策,把上帝的干涉当作是对自己的搅扰,在蒙蔽之中不知道自己犯了什么错,不知道如果上帝不施恩,他也无法悔改。

圣经说:「我使法老的心刚硬,要在他身上显出我的荣耀」,因为法老的刚硬,人看见上帝凭己意行万事 ,上帝行事使祂的百姓得恩典,祂施行审判使祂的仇敌受灾殃。

十灾显明埃及诸神非真神

  上帝降下十灾最大的目的只有一个:显明埃及人所敬拜的是假神,不能造福人群,解救百姓。在降灾的事上,术士可以模仿先知所做的事 ,无论是杖变蛇或水变血,假先知所做的事情与神的仆人好像一样,但在结局上,你看见法老的术士只能降灾,显明邪恶的能力无法施行拯救,这是圣经记载正邪之间真正的分别。

When You’re Tempted to Grumble and Complain

Today’s passage is Exodus 16:1-18.  Let’s go!

Exodus 16:1-3 (NIV)
1  The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.
2  In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.
3  The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

On verses 1-3:  When we’re having a tough time with life today, sometimes we can be tempted to idealize and even worship the past.  Have you ever done that before?  It’s when we speak in exaggerated terms about the past versus the present:  “Before life was so happy and perfect; now everything sucks.  Things were so good back then.  Today things are so bad.”   That’s what the Israelites were doing: in their hunger, they grumbled against their leaders Moses and Aaron.  The Israelites idealized their lives in Egypt when they apparently “sat around pots of meat and ate all the food they wanted” (v3).  Of course, in their worship of the past, they conveniently left out the fact that when they were slaves in Egypt they were crying for deliverance.  They also seemed to ignore the fact that whenever you start a new season, there will be new things to learn, new skills to develop, and new systems to create and get used to.  To expect that life would be perfect as soon as they stepped out of Egypt would be unrealistic.

生命中必须破除的五种谎言

传道书9:3a   在日光之下所行的一切事上,有一件祸患,就是众人所遭遇的都是一样。

1我将这一切事放在心上,详细考究,就知道义人和智慧人并他们的作为,都在神手中。或是爱,或是恨,都在他们的前面,人不能知道。2凡临到众人的事都是一样:义人和恶人都遭遇一样的事;好人、洁净人和不洁净人,献祭的与不献祭的,也是一样。好人如何,罪人也如何;起誓的如何,怕起誓的也如何。3在日光之下所行的一切事上,有一件祸患,就是众人所遭遇的都是一样。并且世人的心充满了恶,活着的时候心里狂妄,后来就归死人那里去了。

在这忙碌的人生中,我们每天都有许多安排,天天都在忙。有何事会让你的脚步暂停一下呢?所罗门王查看之后,他发现义人和智慧人,还有他们所做的事,都在神的手中;即使如此,不管是将要发生在他们生活中的爱或恨,他们也不能预先知道。义人或智慧人,都该算是敬畏神的人。义人是指在神的眼中不以为有罪的,属神的人;而敬畏神是智慧的开端,所以有智慧的人应该是敬畏神的人。

但以理的祷告

〈但以理书〉9:17 我们的神啊,现在求你垂听仆人的祈祷恳求,为自己使脸光照你荒凉的圣所。

当但以理被掳到巴比伦时,他还未曾听过耶利米先知的预言。但是他虽然身在巴比伦,心里却无时无刻挂念著遥远的故乡。因此当他读到耶利米有关耶路撒冷的预言时,心情一定非常激动。他一定没有想到还有回去祖国的一天。他知道犹大百姓所犯下的无数罪过,他知道犹大人是怎样地得罪神,他知道犹大百姓是罪有应得,但是他依然忍不住要为他们祈求赦免,要为家国祈求复兴。耶利米的预言给了他何等的盼望和喜悦!

主前597年,先知耶利米写信给被掳的人:“耶和华如此说:为巴比伦所定的七十年满了以后,我要眷顾你们,向你们成就我的恩言,使你们仍回此地。(耶29:10)”在耶利米的信里提到神的话:“耶和华说:我知道我向你们所怀的意念是赐平安的意念,不是降灾祸的意念,要叫你们末后有指望。你们要呼求我,祷告我,我就应允你们。你们寻求我,若专心寻求我,就必寻见。耶和华说:我必被你们寻见,我也必使你们被掳的人归回,将你们从各国中和我所赶你们到的各处招聚了来,又将你们带回我使你们被掳掠离开的地方。这是耶和华说的。(耶29:11-14)”

在大约主后1980年左右,中国大陆开放,让海外的同胞可以回去探亲或旅行时,台湾有许多老兵卖了家产,不顾一切地回去了。卅几年的离别,有很多人从1949年之后就无法和亲人联系上,那时巴不得有翅膀可以飞回去。此时但以理已经是八旬老翁,真是少小离家,何等盼望可以回去。因此看到耶利米的信,该是何等欢喜,神竟然应允他们被掳的人可以回耶路撒冷!犹大国在主前586年灭亡,大约也有五十几年了。但以理想到神的恩典和犹大子民的败坏,便禁食,披麻蒙灰,定意向主神祈祷恳求。

公绵羊和公山羊的异象

〈但以理书〉8:19 我要指示你恼怒临完必有的事,因为这是关乎末后的定期。

在伯沙撒王的第三年,但以理在以拦省书珊城中再次见到异象。

“以拦”位于今日的伊朗境内,本是一个独立的国家,后为亚述打败,成为亚述的附属国;后再为波斯并吞,变成波斯的一省。“书珊城”原是以拦的首都,波斯王因其风景秀丽,以它作为全国的首都和寒宫。〈以斯帖记〉的第一章第2节就记录了:亚哈随鲁王在书珊城的宫登基。乌莱河是书珊城的一条人工运河,运河本身十分宽阔,两岸相距九百尺。

在第八章里,但以理看到一只前后角不一样长的公绵羊,牠往西、往北、往南去攻击,无坚不摧。天使告诉但以理:“你所看见双角的公绵羊,就是玛代和波斯王”。玛代原属亚述,后来玛代倾覆亚述;波斯本是巴比伦的属国,推翻巴比伦之后逐渐强盛,玛代却日渐衰弱,此时两国组成一个联合王国,双方君王轮流统治。公绵羊的前后角高矮不一样,代表两国势力的不均等。波斯虽比玛代较后才崛起,却在古列王的领导下,变得比玛代更为强大,后来还克制了玛代。所以后长的角可代表波斯王古列,后来居上。相传波斯王出征时喜戴上精金造的羊头头盔;考古学家也掘出这些羊头状的冠冕。绵羊是玛代波斯的国徽,曾出现在古钱币及其他古物上。

在玛代和波斯征服吕底亚之后,波斯为了扩张版图,便向希腊进军,虽然败翼而归,但在侵犯的过程中,曾经火烧雅典护卫城,并做出一些亵渎希腊神明的作为,使希腊人非常愤恨。亚历山大廿岁继承王位,半年后便出军波斯,虽然他只有三万五千精兵,军势远不如波斯;但是他精通战略,屡屡以寡敌众,遍行全地,脚不沾尘,不到廿五岁时就灭了波斯,成为当时的霸主。

From Bitter to Better

There are so many good lessons we can learn from today’s passage, Exodus 15:19-27.  Let’s go!

Exodus 15:19 (NIV)
19  When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.

On verse 19:  The Israelites were looking just to escape the Egyptians, but God was looking to defeat them completely.  That way the Israelites would never have to worry about ever being enslaved by the Egyptians again.

God did the same when Jesus died on the cross and rose again.  God’s goal was not simply to help us escape the clutches of sin and death.  God wanted to defeat sin and death completely so that sin and death would no longer control us.  God didn’t just provide a temporary escape.  He provided a permanent victory.

Exodus 15:20-21 (NIV)
20  Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing.
21  Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.”

但以理见四兽异象

〈但以理书〉7:18 然而,至高者的圣民必要得国享受,直到永永远远。

〈但以理书〉的结构是在第一至第六章先叙述一些重要事件,第七章之后全是异象和预言,并不是按著时间的秩序排列。这件事发生在伯沙撒王元年,但以理在梦里看到一个极大的异象:“天的四风陡起,刮在大海之上”,就像台风来临一样,警告有事情要发生了。接着有四个形状不同的大兽轮流从海中上来:第一个兽像狮子,有鹰的翅膀。这兽可以说是象征著巴比伦,因为狮子是百兽之王,鹰是百禽之霸;考古学家也曾经在巴比伦的遗址里挖掘出狮身鹰翅的图形。

紧接着,“兽的翅膀被拔去,兽从地上得立起来,用两脚站立,像人一样,又得了人心”。这使我们回想,当尼布甲尼撒因为狂傲而被神惩罚时,在野地生活七期如牛,是否就像这头兽失去了翅膀,失去自由,不能想去哪里就去那里。他被“铁圈和铜圈箍住”,直到神拿走他的兽心,使他再得人心,能用两脚站立,像人一样,他终于认识耶和华神为至高的神。

第二个兽的形状像熊,比狮子稍逊一著。但是牠坐的方式很奇特,不是正中坐,而是旁跨而坐,好像重心在一边,两边不平衡。牠的口齿内啣著三根肋骨。根据世界历史的演变和天使的解说,这头熊便是继巴比伦而起的玛代和波斯。这两个国家虽然联合作战,却是一大一小,一强一弱,旁跨而坐,便代表了它俩势力的不平均,后来果然由波斯主导,玛代消失于世界舞台;玛代和波斯后来消灭了三个国家:吕底亚、巴比伦和埃及,正是牠口中的三根肋骨。继而有声音吩咐这熊起来吞吃多肉。这声音让我们知道,让熊有能力的不是熊自己,而是主导这个世界趋势,掌管宇宙的神。

God Is Faithful Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Today’s passage is Exodus 15:1-18.  Let’s go!

Exodus 15:1-3 (NIV)
1  Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: “I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.
2  The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
3  The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name.

On verses 1-3:  In Exodus 15:1-18 we see Moses and the Israelites responding to the incredible way God parted the Red Sea to rescue them from the Egyptian army.  They respond by singing a song of worship to the LORD.  In light of all that God has done for us and the ways He saved us and provided for us, every day let our response be to worship the LORD.  Worship is always the appropriate response to who God is and what God does.

但以理进出狮子坑

〈但以理书〉6:23b 但以理从坑里被系上来,身上毫无伤损,因为信靠他的神。

当但以理被伯沙撒立为全国第三时,他已是八十几岁的老人。虽然第二天就改国换代,但是新上任的玛代王大流士对但以理的印象非常之好,立但以理为总督之上的三个总长之一。立总长的目的为何呢?所有的总督都要向总长汇报,回复事务,免得王受亏损。我想,不止是华人很会走后门,天下乌鸦一般黑。为何要避免让王受亏损呢?王最怕哪方面受亏损?当然是怕税收被下面的人一级级地收进口袋,所剩的才给王吧。

因为但以理有美好的灵性,显然超过其余的总长和总督,因此王想立他治理通国。台北巿长柯文哲刚上任时曾办了几件事,让我在这方面稍有体会。例如,他要求政府官员出差时,想坐飞机的商务舱要自己补价,他自己出差时也是坐经济舱;免去每次要给百姓的婚礼丧事的贺联或挽联,改用电脑印刷,省钱省事;也不再提供免费的应时衣服,例如有什么特别庆典就发放给服务人员穿的一次性服装,等等。老百姓看在眼里,就知道他实在是希望政府的经费能够用在更实际的事情上。百姓的眼光如此,大流士的心思也很类似。但是这样的人很惹人厌,因为他挡掉了很多人的财路。

大流士欣赏但以理,其他总长和总督却把他恨之入骨,因为有但以理在那里,他们想要贪污或行赂都会很快露馅,他们也嫉妒但以理深受大流士的信任和重用。这也是为何祭司长和法律赛人要杀耶稣的原因之一,因为耶稣在各方面都指出他们的不是,让他们在暗中所行的,大白于天下;他们也嫉妒百姓都乐意跟随耶稣。所以他们一定要除掉耶稣。但以理也成了其他总长和总督的眼中钉。若让但以理治理通国,那么他们就“完了”。因此他们非常努力地去寻找但以理误国的把柄。那么多人盯着他,却找不到但以理有任何错误过失,因为他忠心办事。这点让我也感到懊恼,怎么有这样“完全”的人呢?小编我天天打字打了快十年,还是错字一大堆,也是认真打字,忠心办事,怎么就有那么多错误过失呢?人与人真的不能相比,人比人气死人。
